Speaking of Jenks, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that Clifford Gilberto Rhythm Combination IS Squarepusher. I mean, it can't possibly be anyone else. Way too much similarity to even be an ape-ing of Tom-Tom. If it's actually some other guy, I'd be REALLY surprised... I mean bad autechre clones are one thing (Personally Disjecta are tha last ones I'd place the Autechre-lite tag on... they've got a completely different set of sounds/atmospheres) but DIRECT 'pusher chops (come on... fretless bass, the same four breaks programmed with the exact same technical voracity, those trademark 'happy' melodic nuggets, the rhodes piano bits, etc...) seem so alien. Either way, If it's not SQP, I've got NO respect for the guy that did this stuff... -Våt. ----------------------------------- Reckankreuzungs Klankewerkzeuge Limited PO BOX 382864 Cambridge, MA 02238-2864 USA is on line @ http://www.tiac.net/users/sheket ------------------------------------------------

I have to agree wholeheartedly with this. If it isn't Tom, then this disc is the most derivitive thing ever produced. Try this if you've got a cd-changer: Put 4 of Tom's discs in and the Clifford Gilberto disc. Press the random button. Attempt to pick out the Gilberto tracks. Pretty tough isn't it. Utter crap. Ian

Yeah, I can't say I agree with this... It must be Jenskinson. It's average SQP material which on it's own still sounds great in comparison to most breakbeat-jazz (read:'jazzy breakbeat'). I'm just baffled by the prospect of it being a third-party producer... Yes, some of the tracks do some very much like Tom Jenkinson's output. However, much of the album is different. To add some comparisons, there are a few tracks that sound like newer Funki Porcini, and old Amon Tobin Cujo-era stuff. I'm quite appalled that people would discount Clifford Gilberto as a rip-off artist. I think that the album is a really gorgeous listen from beginning to end. Whether or not some of the sound is a bit err.. borrowed remains to be determined by the individual listener. Clifford Gilberto is about as much Squarepusher as Funkstorung is to Autechre, or Komputer is to Kraftwerk. Aaron

Just as baffled as I was when I heard Funkstorung's Post Art/Sanderdienste .. every Ae trade mark appears at one stage or another .. fucked up vox, 16th/24th note rolls , tempo merging, repetitive melodies with big bass stabs on upbeats etc. I admire their work , but I just can't get past the level of imitation . (thanks again for the cdr's Melinda :) ) Tim.
