Well, he used to play bass (or was it guitar? one o' those) for a UK pop band that I really dug back in the mid 80s called The Housemartins. And he was also part of Beats International, I think, who sort of rode the coattails of Bomb The Bass and M.A.R.R.S. to become somewhat popular in the late 80s. Not sure what other names he's using now, if any.

Also he was the bass player for the british band the Housemartins...You are familiar with Pizzaman but he has also gone under the monikers of...Beats International, Mighty Dub Kats. Also with another band Freakpower. The Chem Bros were one of the first chaps to be spinning out his stuff as Fat Boy Slim over the pond. So from there...the rest is history as they say? I know it was a joke, and I am also relatively sure what the U stands for, but if Spooky is being discussed on this list, I see very little problem with discussing Fatboy Slim. A question about Fatboy Slim is also more pertinent to the topic than in a question about what kind of panties Terre Thaemlitz wears. I also read a post yesterday about Soul Coughing, which is about as foreign to the genre as Donnie Osmond. So, if you don't know jack shit about the upcoming Fatboy Slim album, shut the fuck up and don't answer the goddamned question. There's nothing like a well-justified critique... I've not heard of a release date for the album. There's a brief article about it in the current "The Face", which is either a PR puff or their "album of the month" review (I was reading it in a shop; I don't buy "The Face"). I got the impression from the article that the name _wasn't_ going to be "Let's hear it for the little guy" (which was the title mentioned in the "Rockefeller Skank" sleevenotes), but the name they quoted escapes me for the moment. The article certainly contained a favourable review of the album, though. Posters round where I live advertise the next single, "Gangster trippin'", (vinyl and CD) to be released (in the UK) around the 15th. I'd guess the album might be a few weeks after that? -- Richard

interesting question because it brings up a good point...I had a reply all prepared, but then I realized that it wasn't appropriate for this list. For my part, I would say that fatboy slim is NOT idm...choose your own explanation. Given the haughty nature around here sometimes, maybe the best (i.e. most elitist) definition I could give is this...if it's been on the radio or on TV and you can easily figure out who it is, then it's not idm. (correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this includes all those spiffy ads of late that are beginning to include more idm-friendly stuff.) In all seriousness, though, I'd say fatboy slim belongs with the chemicals, moby, the propellerheads and, maybe, even enigma...that is, electronic and dancy (and sometimes intelligent?) but never all at the same time...of course, I don't dance to IDM, so go figure... ---brian Kurt Behn wrote:

I have always wondered about the impact when any of the obscure electronic artists actually make it on commercial radio or TV. I am alluding to this on the possibility that perhaps there may be some sort of evolutionary jump in the music taste of the masses (just like some delayed evolutionary leap in nature - anyone care to point out the specific term for this phenomenon? I can't recall). I know the probability of this happening is extremely low, but what if all of sudden a significant majority of people decide to turn on to the music of Farben, Vladislav Delay, Arovane, Ae, Funkstorung etc. ...and abandon their more mass produced musical leanings? These artists then all get on to TV and instead of MTV, there is ETV (Electronic Music Television?) There are elevated to all the major magazines, instead of Prodigy and FatboySlim. Would this music still be IDM? I'm sure some would still regard this music as IDM, despite almost everyone else listening to it. Then again, some might decide to rebel against this mass appeal and denounce it because of its popularity. Just a thought anyway. BTW, I played out at a lounge few days ago and this guy asked me if I had any Leftfield? He was really getting into the music, and all I was playing was minimal techno in the vein of Losoul, Marvin Dash, SCSI, DBX.... connection???
