not enough. i guess, like lance said, they're here, just don't post much. brap, puckered1, greg clow and lance are the only regs from the year or so back who still post regularly. gonzi, robert merlak, and jeff davis still appear occasionally. and i don't think franz, aaron s gregory, jim@vvm, grant horne, and countless others are even on the list anymore. and even aran hardly posts anymore. too many newbies... look what you started James Bernard (four or five epic unsub announcement posts followed after his almost a year ago.. diskono, brian, etc.) glad to see at least one is back! mlt. ml/vn// [o{st}m.rec]

well, let's see...i subbed to idm in late '95 (?). i think i've seen every possible topic come up two or three times (no, i won't name names; i'd rather not see them again). one thing about this list, though, especially in comparison to other lists i've been on: we've never really had mass exodi (exoduses?). i suppose that means something. cleen "did you forget" dubventure '96 * #### a disturbance in a system. #### laerm. @voicenet.com ##:# see the stars, they're shining bright/everything's alright tonight

well - i'm not really reprazentin' the tru old skool as i wasn't on all the way "back in the day" (i only joined in '93). back in the "olden days", dave at ear-rational was "'da man", CDR was some democratic republic in czechoslovakia and samples were traded as *.au's rather than MP3's. this list has seen highs , lows, spats and blows; most of them entertaining if not informative. i personally think a nice influx of new folks is great, as i'm hearing about new and experimental stuff that i never would hear about otherwise. i don't post as much anymore because i try not to exhaust electrons unless i have something to say. just getting old and farty i guess. but i promise, i'm still listening. np: keith jarrett : live peeeeeeeeeece, -- Jeff Davis pHlow@earthlink.net P:518.475.5042 F:518.475.5657 ICQ:17028671 pHlow.linx: home.earthlink.net/~phlow/ Bochum Welt: www.bochumwelt.com Rotator Locator: hyperreal.org/music/rotator/

this is more like it. the music industry critiquing a mailing list. how about these: "i subbed to that idm, me. what a waste of money on 'phone calls and isp charges. i wish i'd have saved up for a new synth or something." - mr a. fextwin, cornwall. "why don't you bastards talk about records that we can all actually buy and hear. what about some easily available domestic releases on big labels then. you might as well be goin' on about nothing" - mr trench warfare, new orleans. ... y'get the idea. -martin

This is true. I myself have been on IDM since sometime in 94 where I entered into full on lurk mode for a good year or so while I educated myself. I date myself with the reference, but I found IDM via an old SP newsgroup (from where I recognize many other IDM lurkers from time to time) some of you will remember as smothered-hope-l ;-) Like many, Aphex's Selected Ambient Works 85-92 is what brought me into this world. I soon found many like minded on this list and I probably have better archives of this list than the IDM archives themselves! Most of my online buds have come from this list and often my IDM conversations are 'offline' of IDM <aca, you still alive?> I used to post constantly, but now, like many other long time IDM subs, I have a career that is taking up more and more of my time that used to be used glued to the crt reading IDM posts late at night. However, I still take in my daily dosage of IDM-l so to stay current with its pulse, even if it may be an isolated one (and to see if the UPenn Zenon can make me laugh outloud yet another time ;-) Kev - - - - - -- - - - - - FreyGuy <Everyday is FreyDay> ICQ: 4784088 "Like the generation of the revolutionary dead, we have a destiny to create" - Alvin Toffler

Haven't heard that in a while (smothered-hope-l) =) i remember when it went down and epilogue replaced it... sad day... seemed like i had been on that list forever! i hope my remarks didn't appear hostile, i thought it was great. especially in a forum were there seems to be an endless list of complaints directed at the music industry. a refreshing change. which brings me to...
quoted 4 lines The limited nature of a lot of IDM labels (V/Vm, Markant, the Mask>The limited nature of a lot of IDM labels (V/Vm, Markant, the Mask >series, etc.) is bad I think for the IDM 'scene' because it's going to >become intractable and anal as a genre, appealing only to those rich >enough and anal enough to be able to buy imports
i must say i think there is a point here w/ regards to markant - what is it, about 2 a month fer $20 bucks a shot? anyone over $250 yet? i have 3 of them, and while nice i feel that is enough. i noticed a few of the on-line stores seem to have them available for longer periods these days, maybe i'm not alone. the mask stuff are flagged well in advance as specials (what would life be like w/out something special now and then), and appear infrequently, i think that is more reasonable. as fer v/vm i still see the "chart runners" and the fat cat split 12" (i have it taped at 33, great driving music loud) in the stores not sure that they're that ltd. the xmas single was, but again lots of advance notice and a special. not too bad, eh. oh and the price of import v. domestic (shouldn't that be u.s. release, or is this another 'world series' type blind spot). you could always try moving to the u.k. (no i'm *not* really being serious here) and paying around $23 for a 'domestic' non-top40 cd there. -martin -btw- read a review in the wire of that jake mandell ep on lucky kitchen, is that ltd? anyone know an on-line source that (still) has it?. thanks.

How far "back in the day" are you talking about? This list went live August 1, 1993. I remember because I was one of the original subscribers. Set up by Brian Behlendorf and Alan Fluid Parry from Brian's bedroom in Berkeley, CA. I was on the list pretty much for the first year, and then subscribed on and off briefly until the beginning of this summer. If you were subscribed since '93, chances are you didn't miss too much... Hail, hail, the gang's still here. Five-year veteran in effect, y'all. Frankly, I too find the "limited" trend rather annoying. It makes it extremely difficult to plan your purchases if certain good music that you're looking for is only available in a one-week window, or by immediate pre-order (so you don't really know *when* it's going to come out, only that you have to pay for it now in order to get it later). Despite rumors to the contrary, the amount of money one has to buy music is not unlimited, and deciding how to spread it around can be a royal nuisance when the "opportunity" to get into something limited is an unbelievably small timeframe. There's a sense of urgency: if I don't buy it *now* I'll never have the opportunity to do so, and then I'll never hear it unless I pay a collector's price for it. On top of that, you often have to decide to buy before you have any idea what it is you're getting. When you think about it, it kinda makes sense for the label in the short run. What would you rather do, press 2000 and hope that word of mouth gets a quarter of them out of your basement, or press 250, many of them presold already, and be done with them and on to the next thing with the wad of cash you just got? However, I think it can be very damaging in the long run, because if/when you finally get to the point that you *can* sell 2000 copies of your next release through normal channels, no one will be able to find your older stuff, and you'll be too busy cranking out new stuff to reissue the older stuff. People just get frustrated, which leads to MP3s/CDRs and all that other semi-unsavory stuff. I just think it would be nice if I had more than a week (or two) to decide whether I'm going to purchase something now, or never be able to do so again. It can get to be a drag sometimes.
