I am looking to purchase some "essential" early techno stuff. I already have some derrick may, saunderson, and atkins discs, but I am looking to purchase some more essential and influential CDs. Are there any essential Chicago acid house CDs that I should own, or any acid house for that matter? THANKS for any help

do you have the psyche/bfc: elements cd/2x12" on planet e? that's another essential detroit release. it's still in print so it shouldn't be too hard to get. as for acid house, wax trax put out two pretty good acid house comp cds called Jack the Tab both of which collect the most essential tracks of the genre. i don't know how easy these comps are to get now. seeing as they were released 8 or 9 years ago. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

this is almost all psychic tv i believe... is this really considered essential acid house material? I've got the 2xLP of this (not because its acid house, but because I'm a Psychic TV/Genesis P-Orridge collector of sorts) I never thought that this was *really* considered essential, more than probably Genesis considered it so =) There was a discussion recently either on the PTV list or maybe the Coil list were many names were brought up that preceeded and were considered much better than this, along with a rumor that the material was pretty much P-Orridge poking fun at the genre... One way or another, believe that the bulk of this material (plus additional material and new remixes) was acquired by Invisible now that Wax Trax hold on the rights for it has ended and will be released pretty soon (I think this is all the same material) BTW - Jack The Tab is pretty easy to come by... check the cut-out bins and newsgroup forsale lists... see it all the time (more in the cut-bins... a number of years back when wax trax had some financial troubles their releases filled the bins... still see them all the time...) brap@sonic.net[icq: 12645306] http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ sfwd prod | noisesoundnoise chris g. 1547 boston court #7, santa rosa, ca 95405

Really? i guess it's been awhile since i heard it or maybe i'm mistaking it for another comp. I thought remember listening to Maurice's classic "This is Acid" off that comp. Is there another acid house comp from the early waxtrax collection? -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

Here's a tracklisting on this: side one: king tubby - psyche out (r.norris/gpo) pearl necklace - rapid bliss (r.norris/gpo) thee loaded angels - aquarius rising (r.norris/gpo) wolves of the sun - last night (r.norris/gpo) mistress mix - blue heart (paula po/r.norris/gpo) grisedla - oxygen (r.norris/gpo) side two: psychic tv - jump thee gun (gpo) over thee brink - terminate (r.norris/gpo) vernon castle - youth (r.norris/gpo) nobody uninc - only human (nobody uninc/r.norris/gpo) alligator sheer - balkan red alert (d. ball) m.e.s.h. - m.e.s.h. (ball/norris) side three: virgina featuring mista luv (ball/ball) sugardog - groove to get down (gosling/wheelan) mistress mix - wicked (paula po/gpo) psychic tv - scared to live (gpo) side four: dj doktor megatrip & mista luv (gpo/ball) sickbomb - sandoz tabman (gianelli) psychic tv - tune in (turn on the acid house) (gpo) dj doktor megatrip & mista luv - joy (gpo/ball) members of psychic tv at one time or another that i know of: genesis, paula, david ball, fred gianelli & john gosling... if i remember correctly, the jack the tab collected a bunch of tracks from various other releases... more material in this vein included Ultrahouse & Towards (and Beyond) Thee Infinite Beat, the M.E.S.H. 12", along with some other stuff... The comp you're thinking of must be a different one, but I wouldn't doubt that WaxTrax released it... brap@sonic.net[icq: 12645306] http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ sfwd prod | noisesoundnoise chris g. 1547 boston court #7, santa rosa, ca 95405

Ok, i think i've figured it out. The acid house comps i was thinking of weren't Jack the Tab on Wax Trax, they were the Jack Trax, Acid Trax, and Son Of Acido comps on the Chicago Trax label all of which came out back in 88-89. No wonder i couldn't remember their names - it's been ten years! Chicago acid house artists you'll want to check out include Maurice Joshua, Hula, Mr. Lee, Liddell Townsell, The House Gang, Pleasure Zone, Jack Frost, Nouveaux Nation, Kevin Irving, and DJ Pierre to name a few... -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

for samplers, checkout depth charge 1 or origins of a sound to get a flavor for the early UR sound, then burrow deeper to your hearts desire when you find what you like the best. any of the red planet series are highly recommend, as are UR's nation to nation and galaxy to galaxy. np: BC: radiance ii peeeeeece, -- Jeff Davis pHlow@earthlink.net P:518.475.5042 F:518.475.5657 ICQ:17028671 pHlow.linx: home.earthlink.net/~phlow/ Bochum Welt: www.bochumwelt.com Rotator Locator: hyperreal.org/music/rotator/

No wonder i couldn't remember their names - it's been ten years!< Xmas '88, I received 2 records from mum and dad - 'Techno, The New Dance Sound Of Detroit' and a smart acid compilation called 'House Hallucinates Volume 1' which included the rather poor but rousing nontheless 'Pump Up London' which me and mi pals had great laffs singing along to... "Manchester! Liverpool! Hacienda!..." etc. etc. I believe the original version of that track was 'Pump Up Chicago' (by Mr. Lee) but I'm afraid that namechecking the grim-up-north cities of my teenagerdom accompanied by a wibbling 303 was more appealing to me than paying tribute to the home of house. 10 years later, both of these vinyl delights are proving rather more interesting than the monogrammed tie and hankie set I received off my Auntie Meg. Let that be a lesson young 'uns. Damon.

<<I think you mean 'House Hallucinates: Pump Up the World' on A&M.>> Definitely not - the compilation is called "House Hallucinates: Pump Out London Volume One" (HSEA9002) though there may have been an international edition. It mixed a bunch of essential classic stuff with a lot of new stuff. Here's the listing: SIDE ONE (THE BEGINNING) 1. Sleezy D - I've Lost Control (Space Mix) 2. Phuture - Acid Tracks SIDE TWO (THE BEGINNING) 3. Jungle Wonz - Time Marches On (Vocal Mix) 4. William S. - I'll Never Let You Go (instr.) 5. Farley Jackmaster Funk - Jack The Bass SIDE THREE (THE FUTURE) 6. Maurice - This is Acid 7. Liddell Townsell - As Acid Turns 8. Jack Frost - Clap me SIDE FOUR (THE FUTURE) 9. Mr Lee - Pump Up London (Club Mix) 10. Liddell Townsell - The Groove 11. Phuture - Phuture Will Survive [this is actually "We Are Phuture"] If you're after classic acid tracks try finding Jack Trax volumes 3-5. Jam packed with jams. They also did a compilation called Acid House which had some good Armando stuff on it. Also, if you're in the UK wait until HMV has one of their sales - the dodgy sales only product they ship in has a few volumes of some CD versions of the House Sound of Chicago for about three quid. There's also some 4CD "Best of..." box sets for a tenner which have loads of classics on (quality is a little wanting) - there's one called Best of Acid and there's a few more. I've only got the hip hop one but it had T La Rock's "Its Yours" on it so it was worth every penny... A lot of classic Trax stuff has been re-released; try finding volumes one and two of "The House That Trax Built" and the 10" split singles; the remix 12"s are good but not classic. I think somebody has mentioned Flux Trax volume one. Derrick May's "Innovator" collection. Model 500 classics is now out of print but if you dig around and find a copy its an essential purchase.
