Trainspot: The cover art for Envane. Anyone else see Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater? As an architecture grad, I'd bet that it is. If the design is intended to be wholly abstract, then they've made a mighty fluke. If intentional, it is an interesting choice. Wright pioneered open space planning for houses and offices. (This aspect of his style was very influenced by Japanese architecture.) He created many large houses for wealthy clients and numerous Institutional/Commercial projects. Certainly, the notion of showing off just how much space they could afford made Wright's houses status symbols for his clients, but they were also a refreshing change from stuffy Victorian parlours. Many of his projects went to great lengths to express his ideas about the landscape and the place within it of architecture. Can we draw parallels between Wright and Ae? Open structures vs. Regimented, constricted structures? People/Structures in Nature contrasted with People/Structures vs. Nature? Influence of the Japanese? Love of the Suburbs? (These last two are intended less seriously than those they follow.) This note is in no way a complete summary of the influence or scope of Wright's work, but many of these ideas are a propos if not indisputable. N'est-ce pas? magic hands p.s. Envane works on a braod canvas, very listenable, quite moody.

I've been frollicking through the IDM Ring and came across the Crossfade Music Reviews: Autechre "Envane" I don't know how this got past me, but I don't have it! I'm sorry to pollute the list with such and old question, but does anyone know where I can get this on CD? And while I'm exposing my Ae ignorance, can anyone tell me what else I'm missing -- Here's a list of what I already have on CD: Basscadet single Incunabula Amber Flutter EP Tri - Repetae Chiastic Slide LP 5 ****The review in Crossfade suggests that the Envane single leans more toward thier older / more melodic (less experimental) sound. Is this true? The "Envane" on Chastic Slide does'nt have any "shadowy voices" or "roving piano" that I can hear. I can't fucking believe I missed this one! ----------Take comfort in the strong possibility that there are probably a few people on the list that may also be unfamiliar with this single. (I hope). Thanks in advance<<< -----------------------Izzo...

I got to hear a track from this EP last night. In my opinion, Envane is one of Autechre's best works. It hold together beautifully during its 4 tracks, and every one is a winner. Every time I go back and listen to it I'm impressed. Bill -- Sigma6 Interactive Media / http://www.sigma6.com dj marathon: "fibre" up now @ http://www.flatplastic.com/

what's the take on ae's envane around here? maybe this has been talked about already, but if it has, i missed the thread. personally, i think it absolutely rules. this album is more of the same old sound,--limping, spastic beats and twidley moans and whines--but it's done just as well as any of their best stuff off eps 5 & 7. I thought envane was superb, really liked 'laughing quarter' I think it was or maybe it was 'draun quarter', but yeah brill stuff. Prefer this to EP7 I think. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Don't say that, you'll scare people off! ;) Seriously, I think Envane is the last Autechre record before they lost the plot (on the whole). I enjoy bits and pieces of LP5 and EP7, even to the point of loving a couple of tracks, but they just don't hold up as a whole the way Envane does. Envane is great. One of my favorite parts is the first track, where they cut up Kool Keith saying "Jam like Autechre". On a sidenote, is that one of the only explicit hip-hop:IDM connections (where MCs actually drop names)? I know on Common's new record he says something about "Tricky like that dude who does drum-n-bass" (though we know Tricky doesn't really do d-n-b). Though I'm fan of all Ae records i have to admit that starting from LP5 they've lost something extremely special about them which made me love them more than other idm artists. Now they make great, experimental music but their unique authentic Ae feel seems to fade... Hope they gain it again somehow. Though maybe I'm just an old whining guy telling about "good ol' days" and the younger people think about present Ae as I thought about old one? Alien np. David Holmes - Let's Get Killed

envane is one of the better singles they've released, but i'm more fond of chicili suite(does anyone else hear the aphex sample in track 2?)lp5 & ep7 are a little too "video gamey" for me.(ep7 is headed back to earlier heights, however. ______________________________________________ FREE Personalized Email at Mail.com Sign up at http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
