As promised, here is the Substance review reposted from Recoreviews, pt 37 originally posted on 4/7/98. . Substance: Session Elements cd (Chain Reaction) More fabulous bc-inspired techno and experimenting from the Chain Reaction label. This cd compiles the two Substance 12"s on Chain Reaction plus four great new tracks & four interludes. For those unfamiliar with Substance, filtered gritty minimal techno is his style. Fans of Basic Channel, Porter Ricks,Various Artists, Profan and Monolake will love this one. Essential. 9/10 -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

For example, I'd say Monolake have a more of a rounded, bubbling dubby sound than Porter Ricks, who I'd say have a colder sound, with more of a focus on submerged noise. Maybe no one else would agree, but if someone does, you may be on the right wavelength to tell me what I want. :) I've heard the Substance guy is big on Chicago house (imports records for a German record store?), and that that gives his stuff more of a punchiness than other CR releases. Ok, the substance cd has more of a hard crisper techno sound. The tracks still incorporate the trademark bc/cf filtered sound but the percussion seems to be much more pronounced making these tracks quite suitable for the floor. If i had to give this release a temperature and feel, as you have done for the other releases i mentioned, i would say that this one has more of a cold, looped & reverbed feel. In fact several of the tracks on this cd are simply lock grooves played for several minutes. So you can see how it might sound cold and looped. Hope this better describes this release for you.

I don't know about his tastes in music but i do know that he works at the famed german techno shop Hardwax along with several other Chain Reaction, Basic Channel, M, Burial Mix, and Rhythm & Sound label artists. Sounds like a good place to work to me. : ) -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

I'd go so far as to say these guys (thw whole Hardwax posse) have just about earned their own genre, wouldn't you? I wouldn't presume to name it, though... :) -d.w.

I wholeheartedly agree with dave walker. The sound of thebc/cr/m/din/traktor is a genre in itself. how many times have you heard people identifying other records as being basic channel or chain reaction sounding? that says it all for me. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

hmm.. when i try to describe it i would say that it has fairly detroit type beat mixed with a variety of dubby bass lines, and subtle trance inducing harmonies. great stuff. the new din stuff is even funkier.. At 04:08 PM 7/11/98 -0700, you wrote:

Expect a combination of deep muted experimental techno, dub & ambience. They are not hard to find. Here are the suggested starting points for these labels: . Basic Channel comp cd (Basic Channel) . Chain Reaction... Compiled comp cd (Chain Reaction) . Porter Ricks: Biokinetiks cd (Chain Reaction) . Various Artists: DEcay Product cd (Chain Reaction) . Substance: Session Elements cd (Chain Reaction) Similar releases from related labels: . Maurizio comp cd (M) . Rhythm & Sound: Showcase cd (Burial Mix) . Monolake: Interstate cd (Monolake) . Monolake: Gobi Desert cdep (Monolake) For more bc/cr info check: http://www.snafu.de/~circonium/music/bc.html http://www.snafu.de/~circonium/music/cr.html Regarding availability, I believe most of your better online electronic music shops can get all the basic channel & chain reaction releases.
