Bought the Chomp Samba ep by Amon Tobin - its excellent. Like a drum n bass Weathermen! The first two are great d n b workouts, the third is more jazz based and the furth is just gorgeous - seriously emotive jazz with a stoned guitar being plucked and an uplifting sax piece. Superb bass as well. It is better than the Cujo stuff to my mind - more advanced. top stuff still awaiting the new Biosphere....

Just picked up the new Amon Tobin 2x12" on ninjatune and I am impressed. It an amazing eclectic mix of downtempo, trip hop and drum&bass. At times its jazzy, funky, hardstep, even samba. Thge breaks are very strained and tight. At times disappearing and coming subtly back. The bass is low and loud. Not a single bad cut on the whole thing. If you liked hard normal daddy you'll love this. It doesn't have the extreme cut up breaks but it certainly is moving in new directions. Any one who thinks breaks is dead should buy this and eat their words. -- Mark Edward Bowen Warmed Breakdown mb@gettins.bche.uic.edu

And if there's any change, Tobin's debut full-length for Ninjatune is pretty hot too.... "Bricolage." Clocks in at just under 80 minutes :) Aaron

hello, how does one go about making an mp3 into a regular audio CD (as opposed to having to use Winamp)? is it anything like T.S. Not too sure about the LP. The book that came in the 'FunKungFusion' comp lists: ZEN 36 : Amon Tobin - Permutation (june '98) The first single off the LP, 'Like Regular Chickens', is out but is remix only slab of wax. One side is Dillinja and the flip is Danny Breaks. I didn't find either of these remixes exceptional and would rather have had a few new Tobin tracks instead. (and this is coming from a BIG Dillinja and Danny Breaks fan). word to the mothership, brock.

"permutation", the very short review: sound like "bricolage", only more so. it's brilliant, although "bricolage" was even more brilliant - maybe it's bcause they're so similar, i had hoped he would have progressed more, as it is now it's a bit of a corbon copy. q: how is "permutation" different from your last album? amon: um, i made it after... (from a RATHER laidback interview in gothenburg a few weeks ago) 20ies jazz with some REALLY fast/mad breaks and some brazilian influences. btw, amon is definitely not playing live, he feels that there's no point: since the music is made electronically it wouldn't be much of a show (watching him twiddling knobs). he doesn't want to bring in live musicians, he feels that would be a step in another direction from where he's going "i see it as a bit of a contradiction, doing it live, getting musicians on stage - if you're making music electronically you're doing it out of choice, and you're not doing it out of compromise because you haven't got any musicians" and he goes on to say that to at the last minute bring in live musicians just to create a good show wouldn't be true to what he's about. hs ________________________________________________ never underestimate the power of human stupidity

It's just below the Space Needle in the park around the base. "permutation" is i think somewhat more varied in sound, w/ a more electronic edge than the overall live jazzy feel of his earlier releases on ninja. that said i'd recommend them all. if anything the percussion patterns on "bricolage" and the eps "chomp samba" and "pirahna beats" are more complex and varied, w/ fewer straight ahead stormers. the squeaky track on "pirahna beats" (can't remember title, track 3 i think), is one of the more 'militaristic' thumpers but still manages to be v/ swingin, w/ lots of lovely surface noise crackle. the hidden agenda remix on "chomp samba" is pretty cool, too. sounding like an upgraded starker tackhead, w/ its stuttering rythmn stabs. "bricolage" is consistantly dark, but not never static or doomy. v/ deep bass swells, live sounding jazz samples, fluid rhythms and bouncing percussion. 70 min at a domestic price, buy, buy. hoping to catch him on the ninja tour w/ mixmaster morris in boston. -martin

If you're into funki porcini, then I think you'll like all of Amon's stuff. I think it's very, very good, but that still pales next to Permutation. As far as Permutation goes, my only problem with it is that it's so good, I had trouble listening to anything else for weeks on end. I was listening to it several times a day (something I NEVER do). I finally quit listening to it for fear of getting too familiar with it. It's one of the most brilliant examples of sampling I've ever heard. With other sampling auteurs like Coldcut & The Orb, it's always obvious that it's a sample, and there's a certain cleverness about it. Not so w/ Permutations. It's so seamless, you forget it's made of samples. Permutations has recontextualized all those 25 cent thrift store records I've bought over the years (you know, Martin Denny, Ray Coniff, that sort of stuff) and fit them into the continuum of drum and bass. For me, this is a landmark album, one I know I'll be coming back to for years to come. Che rock - rok (v.) - having a conventional and/or boring nature. ex: "Khakis rock". "That Rolling Stones show rocked". syn: suck.
