I saw Isotope 217 open for Tortoise this weekend and if you're going to see Tortoise I would recommend arriving in time to catch Isotope 217. They varied from calming, harmonized, rainy-day slow jazz moments from a trumpet and trombone, to banging on hubcaps and scraping muffin tins together, to live distorto-drum machine jamouts (in the same song). I hadn't seen it done before. They gave an enthusiastic performance. The trumpet player was a very proficient and alternated his horn playing with operating a sampler. Definitely see Tortoise; highly recommended. Someone mentioned catching Lee Perry/Mad Professor to catch some dubness. I saw that show a couple weeks back and was disappointed. Lee Perry played with a live three piece dancehall type backing band, with Mad Professor tossing in the occasional uninspired sampled thundercloud noise and echoes. It reminded me of Shinehead. Buy the Mad Professor vs Massive Attack cd instead.
