speaking of a mac version- According to Steve Jobs, early 1999 will introduce a palmtop macintosh (similar to a Newton Messagepad, buy WAY meaner!) that will run a 'skinny' version of MacOS. If its enough OS to run Vamp, or MacAMP, then a portable palmtop mp3 player would be a lil over 6 months away!!! Dunno if the opening price would make it practical as a pure mp3 player tho.. well see I guess ernie +-------------------------------------------------+ Ernesto Ikerd, (817) 763-4795 Company Graphics, Dept 17 Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircaft Systems Fort Worth, Texas +-------------------------------------------------+

i've heard that they have these: portable mp3 players, kinda like a walkman, that you can connect to your parallel port and and dump data out to a rewritable small HD in the unit, or to MD-data. do these things exist, or shall i build one? :) (dunno how portable that'd be...) * #### a disturbance in a system. #### laerm. @voicenet.com #### one time and you're a philosopher; two times and you're a pervert.

Yup, they do exist. Check out http://www.mp3.com to find the link to them. But if I were you, I wouldn't bother. Sure they're light and stuff, but for $300 for a 50meg mp3 player (which isn't enough space for your average mp3 album) I'd rather dish out an additional $100 for a cd burner. And burn all my mp3's into cd audio which I can take with me anywhere for about $1.50 a cd. Just my .02 cent. AtL-5

the funny thing here... the idea could only happen due to the low cost of large hard drives. now if only he had a mac version :) its a beautiful idea, but how rugid is a HDD. the Washington DC area has some killer potholes. the cool thing is only could upload an entire dj set and if the event you are at gets busted...open the boot of your car and its an instant party...connect to a modem and you got streaming audio from that party in _______. damn...technology is fuckin cool. its a great time to be alive. -steve

I was thinking about the capacity. 2 gig will give you 400ish tracks won't it? How about if the player contained a multi CD-ROM drive, which held CDs of MP3s? You'd get 4 * 650 = 2.6 Gb. Getting tracks into it would be a doddle.
