I have some bad news for you... every piece of recorded music you have ever heard (vinyl, cd, tape, radio, tv, film, etc.) has been compressed. Even live instruments (guitar, keyboard, sampler, whatever) is compressed when put through an amplifier. The only uncompressed music you will ever hear comes from acoustic instruments played right in front of you! OK, so we're maybe talking about a slightly different application of compression, but it's essentially the same thing. There is nothing at all wrong with ATRAC (latest versions). MiniDisc rules OK! ;-) Cheers, Aca Rare IDM Auction: http://www.personal.leeds.ac.uk/~eclaca/auction.htm

i record digitally out of my mixing board onto DAT. i then transfer the DAT to my computer's hard disk via SPDIF and then burn a CD from that. there is no difference between what you have on the CD and what came out of the mixer. can we please drop this now? -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Plan: Eat right, exercise regularly, die anyway.

right, but a digital signal is not identical to an analog (read: real-world, not a signal recorded on analog tape) although it may sound 99% identical to you. also, making three transfers to a signal, especially through spdif cables into a computer sound card, is going to alter the sound to some degree. so something is definitely compromised. also, the above poster seemed to be referring to the level-limiting form of compression, which is done to music at least in the mastering stage, if not earlier as well.

er, guess not. np: polygon window "if it really is me" "a dream is worth a thousand pictures, the mouths of lampreys a thousand more..."
