I just got "The Mix", having not heard any Kraftwerk before (except for bits of "Trans Europe Express" in a music history class). I was quite frankly amazed by the quality and the freshness of the music, given that it is all supposed to be from the 70's or something... this left me wondering, is "The Mix" a compilation of stuff off various albums as I think it is, or is it a bunch of remakes/remixes? Most of these tracks sound as though they could have been made a few months ago, not a whole bunch of years ago, and the production and sound quality were first rate. It is just wierd, is all...

I guess first I'd like to add that its a sad day when people havent heard any Kraftwerk cept for in a music lecture. The music of electronic artists cant particularily age save fora pattern progression within a genre(the use of specific sound type elements). I have some music from 4 years ago that sound still just as amazing no as it did when i first heard it. Quad on Kinetix is just 1 example. Kraftwerk among others like Jarre etc really should have a lot more exposure to todays youth, with the fact that their music is still listenable. I wonder why this isnt so.. any ideas? Neither has Elvis. Or J.S. Bach. They have the excuse of being dead, of course.

Oh ye of little faith. A good source in the US is Best Buy stores. The Kraftwerk catalog has bounced around quite a bit -- some CD's were out on Capitol, some were out on Warner Brothers, some apparerently are available from Cleopatra -- check out http://www.hallucinet.com/cleopatra/cleo_cat.html They list "The Man Machine" "The Model"(Best of) "Radio-Activity" "Trans-Europe Express" and "Showroom Dummies"(EP?) cdnow lists "Computer World", "Electric Cafe", "Man Machine", "Showroom Dummies" and "Trans Europe Express" and "Kraftwerk 2" and the Japanese version of Computer World, which I presume has the Japanese Versions of some songs. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "I read Keyboard, but it's like staring at a book with pictures of simple looking but expensive machines." -- Michael Lazarev NEW CD Comp Electronic Music Project http://soli.inav.net/~kent/emp.html Kent Williams kent@inav.net CADSI 2651 Crosspark Road Coralville IA 52241 (319) 338 6053 (home) (319) 626 6700 x 219 (work) (319) 626 3489 (fax)

The Mix is all remade versions. however, many of the originals DO sound that fresh. check out the album "Computer World", definitely my all-time favorite Kraftwerk record and probably one of the top 10 best electronic albums ever made. recorded in 1981. sounds like it was done yesterday. on the other hand, some of their stuff prior to that definitely sounds dated. the album "radioactivity" is pretty weak. as for g's comment about "crap vocal bits" - DIE BLASPHEMER!! :) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jon Drukman jsd@cyborganic.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------

No, it's remakes and retakes and remixes and refixes. But it's quite amazing, no? So amazing, that you should check out the following: 1. Trans Europe Express (English-language version) 2. Trans Europa Express (German-language version) 3. Computer World 4. Electric Cafe - I can't help it. I love this record. Musique non-stop. There also exist various bootleg CD remix comps. I found two kickacious ones at the bizarre bazaar in Berlin almost at the exact centimeter where the Berlin wall used to cross the main thoroughfare. That's Berlin for you. Funky town. With a zillion weird acid jazz and techno and electro nightclubs in the scariest sections of the East side. Eerie that there's nothing left of the Wall. Just a section or two left in out-of-the-way neighborhoods. You can find more post-Nazi memorabilia in a Pink Floyd cartoon movie. But the past is not so simply eradicated, is it? Think Anselm Kiefer. Or Wim Wenders. Then again - don't think. It weakens the government. Didn't like Germany much, until I stayed in a gay hotel in Berlin. Actually, I didn't know it was a gay hotel until one day my breakfast chum leapt across the table for a kiss. Impulsive, that. He simply assumed I knew, so that I must be, too, and that was that. Another gent later told me that the gay scene in Berlin was more tolerant than that in U.S. cities. Well, just goes to show how far stereotypes go. Wasn't this thread about Kraftwerk? Michael Cretu did a simply amazing record with Peter Cornelius. Anyway, about those Kraftwerk bootlegs, a term which brings to mind fascism, strangely, since it's a sort of anti-establishment thing, but there you have it. Think moonshine. Records? No, the real deal. Includes some razormaid mega-mixes. Some of these mixes were definitely done on someone's car-stereo Gremlin 8-track. Does anyone hear remember the Gremlin? I once bought one for $200 because the ad said "complete with 8-track". I thought this meant a multikulti recording studio. But all I could do was listen to the Greatest Hits of the Sweet over and over and over. Got me all misty-eyed. Thanks to one of our beloved list members, I now proudly own the William Orbit remix of "Radioactivity". See, there was that male acquisitive blah-blah-blah impulse again... Zenon M. There's also a single of Trans Europe Express. It's a CD - EP. Cover identical to the full-length. Check the track listing - includes several versions of TEEx, plus a French lyric version of Showroom Dummies/ Schau-Fenster-Puppen/SchaumRollen. Kraftwerk is a brilliant mathematical singularity. 3

The Mix is a greatest hits remade with updated equipment. If I remember correctly, "Musique Non Stop" is a bit more fucked up than the original, isn't it? But yeah, it came out in 1991. eric

Is this "SLAMS" transitive or intransitive? I have an original issue Tour de France 12" (complete with 'from the movie _Breakdance 2_' endorsement) which, let's say, tootles along fairly nicely, with 3 mixes including a nice long Francois Kevorkian one. And when I get around to updating that discography, the answer will also be "on the recent Japanese reissue of Computer World". (I think it was Computer World, anyway.) To be fair, "DJ's Best" is apparently a real bitch to track down. -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo@swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo)

I have an LP from K-Tel called _Breakin'_ which was a much loved birthday present back in 1983. It has Tour de France on it but claims that it is by a group called "10 Speed". Try tracking down that LP at your local thrift shop. Everyone I knew had that album 15 years ago. Man! Loved that track too. It was always my favourite and I'd play it at 0 to dance and +6 for listening! Dave Ross

I have been listening to the Kraftwerk catalog of albums this week. Every time I listen to them I am amazed at how pure their sound was, and at how innovative and influential they were. I am puzzled by the lack of historical documentation of them or the artistic history and recording techniques that they used. Is there anything in print that is in English that I have overlooked? Even a chapter in a book on electronic music would be more than I have seen. thanks, Steve

there is in fact a book written by a french writer called Pascal Bussy. The name of the book is "Kraftwerk: Man Machine and Music". It is a very good book which explains and describes the carrier of Kraftwerk detailed and deep. There is a very good 180ish-page book by Pascal Bussy called "Man, machine, and music". It covers everything you need to know. I have written a review of the book which can also serve as a short biography. E-mail me if you want it. Eh? Bartos and Flur left even before the "The Mix" album... Bartos is nowadays occupied producing other bands as well as composing music to his rip-off project Electric Music. Fritz Hilpert played with em last tour as well, but then together with some Fernando Albrantes... Yeah, I was aware of the fact; sorry if I expressed myself somehow unclearly... Karl Bartos voiced his frustration with increasingly long gaps between every new Kraftwerk album that "it's like you're having this jumbojet on your yard which you can't ever fly". Now it seems they are taking off again, but let's hope it won't be a crash-landing...

I asked myself the same question. . which is why you will find me at the warfield in San Francisco instead of wasting my time at that hellhole of the palladium (This is my opinion based on about 25 shows i have seen at the paladium, not a single one being worth the money). What a poor choice of locations for what could amount to an incredible show. . . .Even the palace is much better Oh well, saving my money for the tix to the show and tix to San Francisco. . . :TinTheAntiPaladiumOmen np: Squarepusher: Big Loada

Could be no opener. I just returned from the SF show, and they started promptly at 8pm, with no opening act, and played for about two hours. Covered all the hits - Numbers, Home Computer, Man Machine, Autobahn, Tour De France, The Model, Radioactivity, Trans Europe Express, Autobahn, Pocket Calculator, The Robots, and Music Non Stop as well and two new tunes, which were a bit disappointing. They sounded heavily influenced by '92-era popular techno. It was a bit disconterting to hear Kraftwerk borrowing from a genre they greatly influenced. Not that the new tracks were bad, but they weren't very innovative. Excellent show, however with some nice props and costumes. The versions of the tracks were closer to the versions on The Mix rather than the originals, but they tweaked things a bit. Music Non Stop and Man Machine stood out the most for me. The opportunity to hear everything on a killer concert sound system made up for any lack of improvisation. Joe

this is likely. the opening tracks at the tribal gathering show were almost an exact copy, down to the last note, of their 1991 tour. makes you wonder why they bother carting all that gear around when quite clearly they're doing it off the same midi file every time. and the 'new' material they played at tribal gathering was astoundingly shit. they should just stop, now, because it's an embarrassment. what on /earth/ do they get up to in that studio? it seems time has stood still for the past 10 years in the world of kling klang. dust off the guitars organs and flutes and re-create Ralf And Florian, that's what i reckon. <waves>

First of all I'm new to this list. Been here for a week or so. Greg made me aware of it and I finally decided to join in. I've been on the Skinny Puppy Epilogue mailing list for 4.5 years. Now promoted to co-admin with Brad Bell(maximill@u.washington.edu) You here? :) I'll be seeing Kraftwerk perform at this years Roskilde Festival (www.roskilde-festival.dk) on the green stage. It holds app. 18.000 inside a huge tent and it really is a fantastic stage. I've seen bands like Cranes, Cockteau Twins, Ministry, Nick Cave perform there and it's always a treat. ok, back to the subject. I saw Kraftwerk perform 7 years ago here in Denmark in a small theatre that held 1200 ppl and it's among my top 3 concerts _ever_. I'll never forget when they played Tour De France and the 4 video screens in the back of each keyboard console displayed old B/W footage from Tour De France. I cried. The show starts at 9.30 pm and is expected to go on for 3 hours. I have an ex-gf who works as producer assistant backstage and she's informed me that noone else wil perform after Kraftwerk that night. Usually they don't stop until 3 or 4 am but Kling-Klang takes too long to dissemble. I will record the show to MiniDisc with a stereo mic.
