Hello, I'm new to the list here. I couldn't help notice that since I joined about a week ago, most of the posts here have been short messages being only requests to buy records, or pointers to for-sale lists. On one hand, I realize that the trading/buying/selling of 12" goods is a *huge* part of the culture, moreso than in probably any other forum of music these days -- all for obvious reasons. On the other hand, browsing through one "I have aphex, wgchrist, autechre for sale" type message after the other, each with no other content, can get rather boring. Maybe I joined at a slow time. Maybe I should just shut the fuck up. And I don't want to wish the good folks at Hyperreal any more work than necessary -- but has anyone ever considered the idea of an "idm-marketplace" list? Being an "org" site has its limitations, I know. But since most of the posts are more *pointers* to for-sale lists than actual for-sale lists (which is appreciated) and are, hence, more "OK" within an org site, I figure it may possible work. (For one thing, using the word "marketplace" at all may seem a bit obvious... :) Feel free to blast my whinings and general newbieness. I suck, I know. ================================================================== Brian MacDonald <brianm@kuci.org> KUCI 88.9 fM in Irvine, CA -- Orange County "S-H-A-M-Double-E-K -- my definition of dance -- comprende?" ==================================================================

Actually, I somewhat agree (though am constantly searching for those forsale lists!) Thats why I started my whitezone-l (specifically because I was tired of scanning the idm and ambient lists for forsale lists, amongst the 'real' posts) Some people make pretty good use of it (Puckered1 is a good example) but alot of people posts their lists here also because the # of people on the whitezone-l isn't all that big (at least I assume thats why...) brap@sonic.net /// occasional noisy soundfiles (np: burundi challenge.rm) http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ blackdog, vvm, whitezone-l, slipdisc, radiora.ram C.Gosselin, 1547 Boston Court #7, Santa Rosa, CA 95405

Rather than make it a mailing list, doing it up as a proper database application would be something I'd be willing to host at hyperreal. Know what I mean? You could even make it cool and allow folks to be notified whenever a new, say, autechre release was posted for sale. You could do the same thing but in reverse for want lists as well, and then plug the two together. :) Anyways, we have Perl 5 and MySQL (+ P5 libraries) installed on Hyperreal. Let me know if you're interested. Don't get mad if I don't respond immediately, I'm about to be offline for a few days. if everyone would just use what the nice people at synaptic set up at http://www.eazy.net/synaptic-records/main.html we wouldn;t have to even have this discussion. it works fine, there just needs to be more traffic to this site... i dont think it says anything to the effect that posting big lists is a problem either.... andy ajsolomon@wesleyan.edu

A few people have asked about the whitezone-l... there's a link to the sub/unsub page @ http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ basically, its a forsale, wants, etc mailing list for electronic music.... brap@sonic.net /// occasional noisy soundfiles (np: burundi challenge.rm) http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ blackdog, vvm, whitezone-l, slipdisc, radiora.ram C.Gosselin, 1547 Boston Court #7, Santa Rosa, CA 95405

That sounds like a really excellent idea, id rather not post for sale messages to idm... but i do because im very short of money right now. This would help a lot of people to sell records and a lot of people to find them. And keep idm clean.... although it is in a bit of downtime at the moment! steve

One word... digest. The people who receive the digest version have to scroll through pages of trade/want lists in order to find the IDM pearls that lurk in there somewhere, unless of course they trade/sell in which case they're probably unconcerned. I'd personally prefer to see them elsewhere but I've survived up until now. You learn quickly here that one person's signal is another person's noise. A. Whats the big deal with doing anything that takes time ? mmmmmm That it takes time. Extra download time. Extra reading time (even if its just the subjects.) Extra deleting time. For those of us on 5 or more lists getting 2-300 messages a day, believe me it would be useful to take the FS stuff elswhere.

As far as I'm concerned, there is a whole lot more noise lurking inside the bodies of interesting subjects. But this none of this is easily regulated. Fact is, when you're selling records, you want people to buy them, so you'll tell people that you think will be interested. call it spam if you will. use good judgement I guess. post urls! Why not use a free email program that can filter out FS & FT messages - Pegasus Mail? It doesn't solve your download problem, but...

Whitezone-l is for this sort of thing, but it doesn't have the coverage of IDM. If you could get everyone on IDM to join Whitezone-l... Che
