OK So I hate Death in Vegas, Underworld and Primal Scream. Might I suggest better counterexamples -- Bowery Electric, Labradford, Seefeel, and My Bloody Valentine. <<< if you like the latter stuff, you should check out what mogwai do to david holmes's "don't die just yet", starts out all echoey ambient, ends up screaming meltdown ambient. a drum machine does a little drum'n'bass fungle malfunction in about the last 10 seconds, as i guess some kind of ironic nod towards dance music. their "young team" lp is also a good example of quiet/noisy guitar ambience. don't know if its guitars, or just studio fuzz, but after initially not really getting much out of it, the porter ricks "biokinetiks" cd, has been on heavy repeat during a recent bout of programming. its amazing how 70+ mins of hazy thud-thud can go by. the eponymous mille plateaux release, doesn't really have the same feel. are other basic channel releases similar to "biokinetiks"? a local store has the vainquer and maurizio cds in the metal tins - are either similar? do i need both? -martin

All of the Basic Channel/Maurizio/Chain Reaction cds are worth having and all have that similar "hazy thud-thud" sound to varying degrees. The list of cds to get in order of preference but really all are must haves: . Porter Ricks: Biokinetiks cd (Chain Reaction) . Monolake: Hong Kong cd (Chain Reaction) . Maurizio comp cd (M) . Basic Channel v/a comp cd (Basic Channel) . Decay Product v/a comp cd (Chain Reaction) . Vainqueur: Elevations cd (Chain Reaction) -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

i agree with lance, you need 'em all. if funds are tight (like they ever aren't), my order would be a bit different with basic channel and maurizio clocking at #1 and #2, respectively, if only for historical context. i also suspect that kasey kasem will be racking a fast riser for this berlintopten with the upcoming chain reaction "substance" CD. tense, emotional, sonically high strung suspenseful beauty. CR05 and CR18 are pure classics in my book, and having these combined with a few new substance tracks is going to make for a pure gem.
