I just received this from someone who obviously knows me from my old radio show at school. Unfortunately, I have absolutely no idea what song this person's talking about, and of course, this leaves the IDM list as the next place to turn. Read on... Respond to me or the list, your choice. Thanks, Bill / dj marathon

Being that I like very much Reload's Collection of Short Stories, would I also like Mark and Tom as Global Communication? They are they same guys, right? I think so. What does it sound like? And: has anyone heard either the new coil "time machines" or that other?

Oh Christ, it's bloody Olive, those bastions of pale pop who demonstrated the power of marketting by getting to No.1 in Britain (and probably around the world) by releasing the same thing time after time with different remixes until they got it right. The one that did it, and the one of which the above person speaks, is the Paul Oakenfold mix. The track is called "You're Not Alone" and even Roni Size couldn't do anything interesting with it (although he chucks away all the correct bits). That 'beatiful siren' is just a crappy filtered noise - pre-set standard on most 'sound boxes' these days. One question - Why is Paul Oakenfold so bloody popular? The man is a total dick and something should be done. Why? i) he remixed everyone from the Happy Mondays to On-U sound in a horrible baleric style. ii) that bloody Pig-Bag thing (Reach Up or whatever the hell it was called). iii)that Perfecto FC logo. What a load of shite. iv) touring with U2. v) he brought trance back from the grave. There are many many more which are just too painful to list... Anyone want to start the "Kill Paul Oakenfold List"? gb. PS If anyone reccommends to me a 3xCD boxed set of his stuff that is "really innovative" and "lays bare the techniques behind his works genius", I will not be responsible for my actions. PPS Forgive this post. Flu is addling my brain... -- /TheW i http://www.homeusers.prestel.co.uk/lwtcdi/all/ f o L D o dlr WTC "Let's decompose and enjoy assembling!"

Thanks everyone who responded to this request for information. Sounds like it's a pretty mainstream track, but I'm sure the person who asked me will be happy to know what it is. Bill / dj marathon

Paul Oakenfold is popular also because he is a good DJ. Like any good DJ, he knows how to work up a crowd. He has DJed in all the big events in the UK and Europe. His style of trance is very melodic and catchy, which is easy to like. Sure, he's not a genius and he has not done anything which is innovative and creative, but I think his music is okay.

Why should you devote so much negative energy on Oakey? Why don't you start a "Kill Spice Girls list" instead? C'mon, there are other worse personalities than Oakenfold. Adrian

this is interesting...who on on-u did he remix? do u have the details on the album? thanks... <<< he did some gary clail stuff, i think "human nature" and definately a re-mix of "beef" that appeared on the "emotional hooligan" lp, on-u released thru' perfecto/RCA. i think the main part of the lp remained un-perfecto'd. i think there was also another single off that lp which contained perfecto remixes? this did kind of signal the beginning of the end for mr clail, who has done another couple of mostly duff lps misguidedly attempting to do more than just shout the odd phrase over slightly re-mixed on-u comps or tackhead singles. a concept which worked unbelievably well on the "end of the century party" cd, which contained the original (and better) "beef". mad cow beats from yesteryear, probably illegal in texas. -martin

And now settles for an (exclusive?) residency at Cream, making everyone come to him and pay heavily for the privelidge. Sounds like a God complex to me?

Fair enough. I don't want to tread on your toes particularly. If you're content to listen to something you think is just "okay" then please continue...

Because the Spice Girls make better music and are more open about their money making intentions. And don't worry I was just joking about the Kill Oakey list! I don't think anyone wants that (the list, not the killing).

Yeah, there are, but that's my problem, he is a 'personality'. I don't have a problem with this per se, but most personalities reside totally in the mainstream, not in some middleground point between the dance underground and the top ten. For me, a lot of what Oakenfold produces puts good forward looking dance music to shame. That's my beef with him... gb. -- /TheW i http://www.homeusers.prestel.co.uk/lwtcdi/all/ f o L D o dlr WTC "Let's decompose and enjoy assembling!"
