_Passion_: In one word, brilliant. This is possibly the most successful melding of "Third World" sounds and rhythms into an electronic environment ever made. It certainly puts all those crappy ethnotechno tracks to shame (think Transglobal Underground, or worse yet, Deep Forest.) The level of empathy and understanding for the music that was sampled never ceases to amaze me. As a companion piece, _Passion Sources_, which plays the songs that were sampled for _Passion_ in their unadulterated forms, is an invaluable insight into just how successful Gabriel's work really was. OK, enough gushing. Back to Aphex. Home is where the stereo is! Passion is a really good album if you're into ethnic/middle eastern material. I would recommend it. There is also another album out called "Passion Sources" that appears to contain the source material that inspired the Passion album. -Jeremy On Fri, 23 Jan 1998, wells wrote:

Interesting, I was going to add that everytime Passion gets played here @work, I click into sample spot mode...think source direct. Teep

No surprise that FSoL sampled this record! Then again, what haven't they sampled? The little pickpockety bastards! Talented lot, tho. "Passion": A classic, a must-have, one of the best records of the decade, probably the best fusion of ethnic and "modern" musics put to plastic, covers the range of human emotion and experience in surround-sound cinema panorama, listen again and again and again, don't forget to try headphones, and buy yourself some hand percussion, it's chill and it's chilling and it's sensual and spiritual, body and soul, what more could you want? JUST LISTEN TO THE GATING ON THE DRUMS!!! Sorry, a slight panic. Oh, by the way, I like this album. And have a go at the "Birdy" soundtrack, a phab philm by the way, philmed right here in philly. Dare I say a far better film than the visually stunning spiritual near-miss of "Last Temptation". Then again, not easy to put Kazantzakis to cinema. K's epitaph: "I have no desire. I have no fear. I am free." 3

idm or not? i'll just say its some of the most beautiful and well written music i've ever listened to, and i personally would classify it along with my most beloved apollo ambient releases, though it does outshine those as well, IMHO. i was first introduced to 'passion' through an ambient dj's mixtape a few years ago. (he had a promotional vinyl release of the soundtrack). which brings up another comment - if ANYONE has any idea where i can obtain a vinyl copy of 'passion', please let me know... i am willing to spend some cash on an original copy. tom .sig .dig .oog. .sti. .mul. .eye. ö

If anyone is interested in the "ethnic" or "world" music that Peter Gabriel used in "Passion", be sure to pick up the companion album "Passion Sources". Its not as traditionally ambient, but equally as beautiful and exotic in its own right. Ali Lalani "When injustice becomes law... Resistance becomes duty." Some montreal protesters
