All this talk about BOC alluding to Black Dog has got me intrigued, and I must admit that I do not own any of their (Black Dog) muzak. Any suggestions re: what to pick up as an introduction? Preferably something still around and easy to find (no rarities on the scale of Joyrex or MASK please..you'll just make me sick when I can't get it). Also, I read a DJ's chart in URB this month that compared BOC's "Hi Scores" 12" to an early Underground Resistance release called "The Final Frontier" (UR003?). Anyone with a deeper record collection than me care to comment on this?

Start with 'Bytes' (on Warp, Wax Trax in the US), then 'Spanners' (Warp again, EastWest in the US), then 'Music for Adverts' (Warp, no US release). I think 'Adverts' is actually my favorite at this point but I'm sure that's a minority opinion and it's probably the least accessible. You might also listen to the Plaid album 'Not for Threes' on Warp, and 'Parallel,' a Black Dog singles collection on GPR. I don't recommend 'Temple of Transparent Balls,' which has too many duds IMHO.

'bytes' every time. music for adverts is not representative of the black dog sound as a whole, and though it is definitely worth getting, the earlier material from when the black dog had three heads is where you'll find the treasure. if you can understand what bytes is about then it might just change the way you think about all music. just look at the front cover before you listen. carefully

they're REALLY different records. i wonder why that person thought of such a thing? on the whole underground resistance are in a different vein to something like boards of canada, but if anything comes close to their sound it would be the ep 'world 2 world'. though earlier stuff like world 2 world are things i will treasure for all time, the mad mike productions of the last couple of years have left me cold. i bought electronic warfare, and it's my favourite of his recent work but even that isn't very spectacular except for the amazing last track. it's a shame - in terms of imagination, his counterparts drexciya have left him standing, and even jeff mills (who i don't rate) is starting to show the guy up a bit. the cheesy secret agent-style label stories are not much more than irritating nowadays <waves> np - moment's notice - john coltrane

I like world2world too....funny, even though all the tracks sound like they were recorded on a cheap 4-track recorder, they really are quite cool :) I heard Amazon when it came out (on Colin Favor's Kiss fm show, back when it used to be good), and loved that track ever since. Jupiter Jazz isn't so bad either. Another Black Dog release that needs to be placed in a special IDM shrine is a used CD I picked up at Rasputin's in Berkeley,CA for $6.00.
