Hiya, On my way to get some lunch today I stumbled on a copy of Aphex' PowerPill "PacMan" single CD wedged in between Jon Bon Jovi and the Spice Girls in the "extremely cheap" section of (oh yes) Diskoland, the local record store, for less than a dollar. Since I already found a copy myself in the "even cheaper" section of another shop a while ago for around 50 cents, I figured I offer this one to anyone who wants to hear some more crappy Aphex music and doesn't feel the need to waste his or her monthly pay on any increasingly excentrically priced Mask or Caustic Window twelves. First one who offers me something nice and loud like a tape with loads of unreleased Optical and Ed Rush tunes or whatever gets it. Hey, I'll even throw in a tape with all those hard-to-get AFX and Caustic Window tracks if you like. Just don't ask for the Q-Chastic single. Additionally, I'd be very grateful for some explanation about what's so special about these Mask twelves. Oh and, Chris (Miller) - there were one or two Technohead singles in there as well. Mail me if there's anything you want me to look for. completely unrelated nerdish lo-tek question: does anyone by any chance know the WinAPI command with which to conjure up the "Open with" box which appears when one tries to execute an non-registered file format? OK... MASK is a collaborative label of Skam and Musik Aus Strom, two IDM labels which are currently "hot". MASK releases are 12" EPs featuring a handful of tracks by artists from each of the "parent" labels along with like-minded friends. They are somewhat unique in that there is no proper track listing, just a list of the artists which appear "in no particular order", so listening to the records can be a guessing game if you'd like. Finally, MASK releases are very limited - 01 was limited to 100 copies, 02 to 200, and the upcoming 03 is to be limited to 300. All of this adds up to make MASK records "special" in some people's eyes. Personally, I can't *imagine* paying the amounts being bid on these things, but to each his (or her) own, I suppose. Greg

Oh Robert !!! Coming from you this is *rich* - so there's hope for you yet :-) Aren't you the one renouncing the past and history etc. and saying that there's too much new music happening at the present and there's no place in your life for digging through the archives from yesteryear? I find this heartwarming... Have a good 98 all of ya. I *

Oh really? This name rings no bells but I certainly remember the track very well, and it's been bugging me too! (thanks Rob for raising this question). I thought it was some kinda early 80's funky soul band ... (mind you, maybe 'colonal abrahams' *is* just that). I * np : Dark Hearts vol 1

Yes that was me, but people are changing all the time. I'm listening at the moment to some of my fathers records, that I used to listen when I was a child of 3-4 years. My father have a rather big record collection, and I pick up some of Japan, OMD, Human League, Stranglers, Talking Heads, Elvis Costelo, Lene Lovich, Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream, David Sylvian, Devo, Roxy Music, Robert Fripp, David Bowie, and some more albums and singles. I really enjoy listening to this records, but that's probably because of the fact that I love music. But, I cannot understand this stuff the way I'd understood it if I was born 20 years befor than I was. This just isn't my time, my way of thinking, my style, to sum it all, this isn't my music ---> it's my fathers. I addmit that I love and really played a lot some of these records, but I'll say it again that's just my habbit (I hate this word, but I don't know that much English for more suitable word) of listening and loving music. This is what I do best and this played major role in forming my personality and my stands. But at the end I must say that I much much more love techno/ dance music than all this father's records, because I grew up on my CDs and records and that's my time, my era. I tell you something rather interesting. When I listened to Talking Heads album last week, my father entered my room and asked me what am I doing with his record ? I told him : 'Nothing, just listening.' He replyed : 'What's with this music today, if you have to listen my records ?' Of course, he was just jokeing and teasing me. But there is really some truth in this... IMO, IDM also had and still have big influence on me. It's the place that I can find out about recent releases, read some good reviews, get help very fast and really effiecient for some discographies or releases, know and get in touch with nice people, improve my English, trade with people, find about some beautiful record stores, and finnaly to help as much as I can or know with the all the information I can get to all of you IDMers. That last thing is the biggest value of IDM, imho. I wish you all the best in 1998. and sorry for the bendwith (I even don't know how to write this properly, but I think you'll understand it) yours, rob p.s. Try to live few days in Rijeka, Croatia; this is a country where people don't even listen to my fathers records :-) You don't even know how happy you are.....

The point Robert is making is absolutely true. I *was* born 20 years before he was, and I was thus around and know all the records he mentions:
quoted 3 lines Japan, OMD, Human League, Stranglers, Talking Heads, Elvis> Japan, OMD, Human League, Stranglers, Talking Heads, Elvis > Costelo, Lene Lovich, Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream, David Sylvian, > Devo, Roxy Music, Robert Fripp, David Bowie,
BUT : I missed out on quite a few _big names_ at the time - dunno, they just passed me by, and when somebody tries to foist them upon me now (eg. Television's Marquee Moon) I just don't geddit. It seems out of time and all in a wrong place. I recently lent my prized Wire (Pink Flag / Chairs Missing / 154 / A Bell is a Cup) to a techno DJ friend of mine, saying he MUST hear them, and he gave them back telling me he'd been busy pushing the "skip" button a lot :-) I don't mind and I understand this now ::: IMO if you were there originally and appreciated the stuff when it came out with the Zeitgeist of the time, then it will always hold a special place in your heart. On the other hand, if you come to it later as a newcomer, you may still appreciate its musicality or originality *for its time* but you may never truly live that music or have it engrained into your bloodstream the way you will with music that forms part of your growing and evolving experience. Don't come Bach and Beethoven with me now, y'hear :-) That's a different kettle of pirhanas entirely. Maybe I'm not formulating this very clearly... but I hope I can get across the gist of what I mean. I grew up remembering a million hot sweaty parties dancing to UB40, thus I shall always enjoy "Signing Off". For somebody hearing it for the first time today without that encoded memory, it may mean far far less than it does to me with all the added enhanced layers through time. Blah blah and further blah. Oh, and Robert : it's "bandwidth" - and I'm also sorry about jamming it :-) I * "Incomplete without surface noise" - Autechre
