It's only just dawned on me that Hinterland by Strange Cargo is actually William Orbit's Strange Cargo IV. I liked most of SC3 but given I've never heard anytrhing good, bad or indifferent about SC4, I wondered whether it's worth getting. Any opinions? Thanks Robin

Big thumbs up. Even better than SC3. I've listened to it about a zillion times since I purchased it.

Can anyone tell me if there is an Alberto Balsam (Aphex Twin) remix? Also, does only RJ remix his own stuff or do other peeps do it to? Sorry for the mundane: no music or anything here in Kingston, Ontario! Let me tell you, just being intelligent (never mind into IDM) is pretty unique here in good ol Kingston. M

Coincidentally I just got it a couple weeks ago. It's fabulous! Heard some of WO's new stuff on KCRW during the last week (he had a show for a few weeks.) Very interesting stuff, and *finally* some completely new stuff from him. What I heard was very ambient, kinda like Scanner (lotsa sampled conversations and speeches) with cool FSOL-ish beats added in. Guess he's in the studio as we speak, putting finishing touches on a new album. I'll be first in line! -Phil [----------] [---] [-----] [-----] [-----] [----------] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [----------] [----------] [---] [---] [----------] [----------] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [--------] [-----] [-----] [---] [-----] [----------] Home is where the stereo is!

i don't know, but the video for his "Barber's Adagio for Strings" was on AMP two weeks ago, and is very pretty. the song is in the tradition of taking a nice classical sample and synching it to a trance beat, but is quite well done, and the video is quite clever. good job, mr. orbit. .af.

The album version of this track is not the trancey one. It's a straight, slightly disappointingly-flat sounding synthy stringy verison (like the trance version before the beats come in). Having said that, I quite like the album as a whole. A good mix of tunes, some more idm-ised than others, but nothing that will frighten your granny. I was thinking the other day that some of it wouldn't sound amiss on a Bola record. Coffee table IDM? Paddy np Air: The Virgin Suicides OST. I heard a snippet of one of the versions of Adagio for strings last week. And was very very dissapointed. Some of Orbit's Strage Cargo work is what i consider the best 'poppy' techno you can find, So when i heard he was doing a remake of the Barber tune (of which i own a multitude of different recordings, basically i love this song) i was very intrigued. However the mix i heard was your basic build-up 4OTF techno track [here's the strings, here's the cello, ok now here is the bass, and ok here comes the kick drum]. Which i figured would be the case, but i was hoping for more. So much of this type of techno relies on this monumental buildup type thing, which barbers original also does [IMO It's the most classic example of using this type of song structure for great emotional effect]. I figured they would be a great fit. But the track i heard was very underwhelming. m.

I'd have to agree with this. While I was in Virgin the other day i noticed it on the listening station and gave it a chance. The album version was no more than a very faithful rendition of Barber's Adagio for Strings without the full orchestra. I've been fond of Orbit's work since his Strange Cargo stuff. I think my mum bought a copy of Strange Cargo III for me when I was fourteen. I think that "Water on a Vine Leaf" was responsible for my intial exposure to ambient music. Obviously I'm really happy he do more of his solo work. I'm not terribly fond of the whole band-in-front electronic-producer-guy-back thing that's been rather popular in music these days. Though I'm very fond of Orbit, I'm not sur what to do about Pieces. I have a rather nice classical music collection and, by virtue of being a university student, do get out to see a lot of classical performances on tour. My dilema is do I purchase it knowing that, while it will sound nice, but i may be terribly disappointed with it when compared with the original. The typical fears about cover albums... also I'm not particullary convinced of the cogency of electronic artists interpretting classical works for some reason... hmmm... I read an interview in Dazed and Confused (i know...) mentioning that Orbit was also working on a another pop-type album to be released some time this year. does anyone know anymore about this? rgrds ar
