hi folks, in a very recent interview with a .be magazine, front 242 declared themselves "dead and obsolete" eventhough they are still touring (see my review of some months ago). they feel they "having nothing more to contribute" to the current electronic scene and "feel surpassed" by so many other bands. excuse me for my poor translation skills. apparently, no new material will be released and some band members will continue to pursue careers in other bands. a possible new album to accompany their current tour was not mentioned, eventhough a new techno-y chemical-bleep live-version of _first in first out_ (from _front by front_) appears on the compilation _mind the gap vol. 17_ (see my seperate mail on gonzo circus / mind the gap). funniest quote from the interview : "we won the lottery and with that money we bought an emulator-2". dv8

How very strange... Their last releases, _Up Evil_, _Off_, _Angels vs. Animals_ (not counting the live album) showed them developing into a something neither industrial-dance not techno -- more effective and much less obvious, and harder to categorize, than their WaxTrax material. On the other hand, they have been absent for several years (and as I recall, the material they've played recently included no new tracks, correct?). Perhaps just as well not to hear them make a slow slide into irrelevance, if that is what would happen. --Mark

Too true. I thought the last couple of albums were very accomplished. Their harmonic/melodic sense is miles ahead of the competition, and as you say, they had evolved into an interesting hybrid of genres. Maybe they're just getting too old for this sort of stuff? At any rate, a great pity. Ashok PS. What is "Angels vs. Animals"? On

They might be dead, but the won't be forgotten. Codenys, Bresanutti, De Meyer - Heroes!

The last ep (94?) that basically contained "Angels" and "Modern/Speed Angels" remixes from the OFF album. Not a very good EP I'd like to add... Front 242 is dead, long live Front 242! What's the score on Mix@ge / Mut@ge ? I've been trying to get it for quite a while, but no-one knows about it over here (S Africa). Label? "Off" has such a lot of logos on it : Sony / Epic / RRE in collaboration with Play It Again Sam Records ... Has anybody got it? Is it worth pursuing? (I still love Slaughter off Official Version best). I * "Incomplete without surface noise" - Autechre
