UK based DJ/artist who does what I would pretentiously describe as "cinematic techno", i.e. there are a lot of soundtrack-ish and filmic elements in his work. First caught my attention due to the title of his first album: "This Film's Crap, Let's Slash The Seats" (there's that movie connection again). Dunno if he's done any work under other names or not. This baby comes highly acclaimed : "From the Winner of Best essential Mix at Muzik's SAS awards 1997" Voted album of the month by: MixMag, Muzik, Jockey Slut, Big Issue, Wax & Select. "Let's Get Killed is every music fan's dream come true in glorious living stereo" (MixMag) WELL!!! It doesn't get much better than that, surely :-) I am yet to hear this - apparently it came and went and sold out pronto and new stocks are not yet in... so please spill the beans: What's it like? Hey Bart You're using enriched text mode or *something* that only others using the same mail programme canbenefit from (ie. print or view the way you write it, with bold, underlinings and italics etc.) This is what you seem to be using: X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.0 Release Candidate 3 <><><><><> For the rest of the list members, this poses an irritating problem, because my programme wants to open the web browser in order to read your messages - which rather disturbs the flow of plodding through heaps of posts. Can you please do us all the favour of switching to a 'normal' text mode and ticking the appropriate options box off? Thanks very much. I *

Smokebelch II. this is a great remix. i think this EP was recorded at Sabresonic too. while were at it dont forget the David Holmes mix on St. Etienne - Like a Motorway. fyi, this CD also contains the Autechre mix titled Skin up, Youre Already Dead.

Yes he has. He recorded his first album (This Films crap Let's Slash the Seets) in Sabresonic studios, and many of his tracks were produced by Jagz Kooner & Gary Burns and even one track is produced by his highness Lord Sabre Andrew Weatherall himself. On his debut EP on Warp called "JOHNNY FAVOURITE", wap42cd Holmes did this single together with Kooner and Burns. He also did one remix for SOP, on their legendary Smokebelch EP. ross wrote :

david holmes has had a long association w/ the sabres crew. i 1st came heard him on their "smokebelch II" single, and his remix of that track was widescreen acid strafed tribal pounding of the highest order. pretty amazing as it begins sounding like a fairly inoccuous piano based house shuffler. this version is pretty easily available on the "sabresonic II" compilation on warp. his best stuff imo is in a similar vein in that the tracks are basically one long crescendo, and if yer lucky end in a torrent of drums and acid squelch. the "johnny favourite" single on warp is a more subdued and sinister take on this approach but is also worth having. the saint etienne single "like a motorway" is a definate must, a blinding mix from holmes, plus an autechre mix, and anyone who is a sucker for shangri la's style pop death story songs (like me, unfortunately) will also enjoy the original. did this have a chemical bros mix when they were still the dust bros? don't have it w/ me so i can't check, but they did a lot of similar forgettable thumpers around this time. actually they still do. -btw- a. weatherall also weighed in w/ a great dubby hip hop mix of saint etienne's "only love can break your heart" some time earlier. around '94 holmes was also part of 4 boy 1 girl action on his own exploding plastic (...?) imprint , with at least kooner + burns of the sabres, who i think released 2 singles. unfortunately i only have 1 track, "hawaiian death stomp", on a cd comp "euphoria" (which is also reccommended). starts off w/ a patti smith sample (?) "i haven't fucked much w/ the past, but i've fucked plenty w/ the future.." and blasts off into a raging percussion meltdown. anyone know if any of this stuff is still available? and then the cinematic techno "this films crap..." phase, which left me cold. i traded the cd. "let's get killed" is better, funky grooves, jazzy touches, short tracks. tho' i'd swap it anyday for the two 4 boy 1 girl action singles. -martin

I remember a label called - I think - Exploding Plastic Inevitable, is this it? I had a radio show tape with some track that was from that label (not 4 Boy 1 Girl Action tho) which was awesome ... can't remember who now, though.

perhaps not quite idm, but wanted to respond to a posting citing "let's get killed" as an ace album from last year (which it most certainly is) and wondering how they missed (I dunno - never read mixmag or muzik?). specifically cited was "don't die just yet" (last full track on the lp) as the standout(and it is), but did ya notice it was a cover of a Serge Gainsbourg track? if you don't know who Serge is, then you're a) not French, b) didn't come of age in the sixties (not that I did, but close), and c) need to do some homework (as I did). my question: anyone hear/know of the original, and if so what's the story? I'm usually far too lazy and too much a git to thank people for the help they provide link wise and such, but I received *so* many responses to this wanted to that everyone... david toop... just received pink noir. love it, same being said for spirit world and screen ceremonies... know that there are a few odd tracks here and there on em:t comps, but is there any other material available beyond this? mogwai - my roommates kid (6 when she said i should buy the release in question) is cool as hell and when mogwai remixes 2xcd was first released and she heard it at the listening station at Reckless Records in San Fran she told me to either buy it myself or buy it for her. acted on her tortoise recommendation (think she heard that at reckless also) but only just picked up kicking a dead pig + fear satan remixes... anyone tell me how the originals of this are_? the my bloody valentine remix that had the distorted noisey loop going for something like 5+ minutes that has the nice bits slowly emerging is amazing... david holmes... picked up lets get killed a while back... dying to hear more, just looking for direction.. any help appreciated... spybey/plotkin - anyone heard the collab on kranky? tried to fit as many in here as i could to cut down my personal list traffic :) brap@sonic.net icq_12645306 http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ coming sooner than later: sfwd0004 - pre-mil·len·ni·um soundscapes 12" our future has never been so frightening: http://williamshatner.com/

Apparently there is a remix by Mogwai (I belive the other side is by Arab Strap), which has a sample from one of my favorite bands (Slint) and I would like to hear it. Can anyone offer help? bill, those who care - what yer after here is the two disc/12" release of "Don't Die Just Yet," the last track on Let's Go Get Killed, attributed in the liner notes to Serge Gainsbourg, the famed French... umm... musician from the 60's. Go Beat! GOBCD6 (569 289-2) has your Magwai mix, among others, which I recall as pretty decent. also an alternate mix from Holmes called "Don't Chant Just Yet" (has a little rougher edge to it), and also the Arab Strap and Dakota mixes. Go Beat! GOBCD6 (569 291-2) has the La Funk Mob mix (nothing overwhelming, but nice a laid back) and the Max404 mix, which is da f*ckin' bomb, if lushy jazzy horn and guitar sounds over a warm house beat is your thing (akin to Ibbotson, but maybe with a fuller sound). and it's nice and long, too. these were pressed in the UK only, so to get them...? try www.juno.co.uk. mail 'em if they don't list it in their inventory 'cos they should still be able to get them. or maybe www.action-records.co.uk? or, hell, just start at www.gemm.com and go from there. ok, done playing "Lance" for now. cheers all. daevid j btw, for those who don't have it and are tempted, _don't_ rush out to get This Film's Crap. it's all right, but certainly not great and not on par with Get Killed. if anything, get the ep for "Gone," probably the best track on the record, and that way at least you'll get the Kruder + Dorfmeister rmx.

don't have full details but this was 4or5 12" w/ rmxs from "let's get killed" singles. it cost about $40 in the u.s. my recommendation would be to grab the u.s. 12"s of "gritty shaker" and "my mate paul" - that w/ the cd or 12" of "dont die just yet" (mogwai/arab strap... mixes) at import price will get you all the best stuff for about $20.i think there was just one unreleased mix on "stop arresting artists" by two lone swordsmen, and much as i love 'em i think i'll do w/out. particularly if its one of their light up and let the loop run workouts. -martin note one is rotted music

Just to dissent, I think that "This Film's Crap, Let's Slash The Seats" is 1000% better than "Let's Get Killed". I bought the latter album and sold it after about a week - those vocal interludes recorded on the street in between the tracks really annoy the hell out of me (I mean, after hearing them once, or perhaps twice, would you REALLY like to hear them again and again?) and many of them are part of the next track so you can't damn well program them out. And the music is just a bit big-beaty for me... pretty good in a lot of parts, but not enough to outweigh the drawbacks to me. On the other hand "This Films Crap" (yeah, the actual album title has no apostrophes, naughty!) is just a totally legendary album. The first track, "No Mans Land", and the last, "Coming Home To The Sun", share musical material, and the album's worth it for these tracks alone - epic sountrack-like stuff. Much of the album is co-produced by Kooner/Burns of Sabres of Paradise; there are cameos from Jah Wobble on bass and Sarah Cracknell of Saint Etienne, and indeed Keith Tenniswood (the "other" Lone Swordsman) plays on one track too. Don't believe the nay-sayers, this is an excellent album and deserves at least a good listen in a shop somewhere. I'm sure you can find it second-hand somewhere too. Actually, they WEREN'T recorded by Holmes on the street as he claims. Or at least not all of them were. Not long after I got the album, I was watching an episode of Taxicab Confessions, this great documentary series where people are filmed in taxis with a hidden camera. One segment features this scary dude with a stars 'n' stripes bandana ranting about beating the shit out of someone in a bar brawl, or something to that effect. And wouldn't you know it, but excerpts of this guy's rant appear on "Let's Get Killed" as one of Holmes' supposed "field recordings" from the streets of NYC. Don't get me wrong, I still like the music on the disc fine. But this sort of made me wonder how many of the interludes Holmes actually got from "real life", and how many he scooped from other sources. Greg

on one hand, i liked the "street samples" bit. the only part of the entire album i thought was original.

I dunno about the street samples being "the only part of the entire album that's original", but one of the interludes _is_ a favorite part of the album for me. It's a guy rapping over a beat that sounds like it was constructed from street musicians playing on overturned barrels & buckets & things. Too bad it's so short (around a minute)... Too bad it's so short (around a minute)...<< "Head Rush on Lafayette" - that was my favourite too! And the guy drops his phone number at the end too - we'll all have to call him up (212-2404-9530840) and tell him he's uncredited on the album. The other interlude that cracked me up was the gay sounding kid who wasn't allowed to dance at the punk club cos they thought he was moshing... and the girl going on about James Bond and then she argues with the guy who thinks Shaft would kick his ass! The first album was cool but in a different way - it was more like a film soundtrack with a dance music undercurrent while "Let's Get Killed" reverses this. On a more stupid note, I always though the outline on the cover was a fierce dog rushing headlong out of the CD - the two arms dangling down are like paws. Guess I'm on the wrong list. BABY DIDDY

Ahhh - I checked up on this after Greg's last posting. If you read the liner notes, Mr. Holmes doesn't credit the above rant to anyone or any section of New York. Yet, with all the other stuff he tells ya where he recorded it. So he probably didn't cheat :) -i. -----== Sent via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==----- http://www.dejanews.com/ Easy access to 50,000+ discussion forums
