Okay, so does anyone know what Autechre and AFX actually use for their audio-recording on their computer machines? And exactly what does Prot(T)ools do? Anyone out there use LOGIC Audio? Kalib

it's a hard disk audio recorder. like a fancy tape deck but with tons of options and it uses hard disk files, not tape.

In an old issue (#27, #28?) of Future Music Autechre talked about gettin' into harddisk-recording. At that time they used Logic so I guess they use LA now! dennis / ear

Pro-Tools is a hard disc editing and recording system manufactured by DigiDesign and Avid Technology. It's designed for the Power PC or Apple Mac and the latest version (4) has all sorts of cool sound manipulation facilities - like Time Squeeze (where you can compress or expand sound without changing pitch) and EQ, reverb, delay, pitch-shift etc. The system samples sound and you can cut and paste it into regions, duplicate, loop, etc. It's completely upgradable to over 48 tracks, and is the simplest of the workstations to use, and has the best graphic user interface (GUI). Many other companies make what they call "plug-ins" (reverb, amp simulation etc.) and it contains a virtual mixer window as well, which can automate every function completely, from EQ to pan to level. It's the most popular industrial tool currently in use in studios around the world. Anybody who's rich enough to afford it will never want for anything else. Good reading : Sound on Sound magazine (British publication). Keyboard magazine.

Logic Audio is a sequencer package, which is a sequencer and hard disc recorder in one and is compatible with ProTools hardware. It's also extremely popular. Manufactured by EMAGIC. Released late '96 : v2.5 for use on PC (Windows). Access Emagic at: http://www.emagicusa.com *^*^*^*^*^*^*^ Spaced Out Sound Studios Cape Town, South Africa *^*^*^*^*^*^*^ I *

Finally got cubase VST yesterday...going mad trying to figure out how to use it with recycle. It's pretty dope, all things considered. A bit touchy and you can't really do everything you can do with outboard gear, but it's nice to have it on the pc in my kitchen to fuck with ideas, samples, etc. Kind of looks to me like the future is all this shit in one box... rebirth (emulation of analogue synthesis) Cubase (midi + multi-track recording sampling + effects + eq) And programs like that weird algorithmic stuff the drunkman was talking about a while back, like doing gaussian blurs and shit to samples. But really, nothing can compare to twiddling knobs on a goofy old analogue synth... word to the mothership, brock, who's happy to be making noise, any way he can! :-) np: still SAW I...

Watch for Logic Audio 3.0, which will add VST-like features and put the program back on top of the heap for audio (by far IMO). Certainly unsurpassed for MIDI (even if I wish it supported a "structured programming" model, i.e. sequences of sequences in addition to tracks of sequences). Logic Audio is not for beginners though -- not even much room for happy accidents like in Photoshop. Also it has it's problems -- for instance, it cannot render a digital mixdown to HD with pan and volume changes, even though it's able to play this in real-time. 3.0 is supposed to add this feature. Anyway, I'm a recent convert and already swear by it. Nothing, even something so huge, can be everything to everyone.

This is my favorite stuff...time-intensive, though. And sitting through samples dumps...ugh. --Mark __ <http://www.xnet.com/~mkolmar/BurningRome> < MPEG & RA audio clips > m u s i c : w e b : s o u n d d e s i g n : h t m l : c g i : e t c PS More tracks to be added soon...give it a few days.
