Yes, Dead Cities has melody, ambience, and rhythm. I still hated it when I first heard it, and even though my hatred has mellowed a bit, I have major problems with it even now. The main problem, I suppose, is that the 3 qualties you want are all seperated. Half of the tracks are really hard mindless techno, fast and abrasive, but not in a good challenging way--instead in a pop technoish way. Ambient bits are thrown in between every track, but they amount to mostly 20 seconds or so of wank apiece. Then there are some really formless boring ambient/melodic pieces. I'll give it another listen and reassess it soon (maybe tonight), but the album just never worked for me. Sam

I must agree totally with this assessment of Dead Cities, and I adore Lifeforms, but never really gelled with ISDN either. In a similar genre but IMO better, try Third Eye Foundations' "Ghost". Very ... all of those things :-) I * np : Jimpster's Bad Hair Blues "Incomplete without surface noise" - Autechre
