Public Energy and Tri Reapeatae++ are my two favorite lps, but I don't have Chiastic Slide yet. So C. Slide is mellower than Public Energy? I genuinely want to know since I'll be picking it up this Sunday and I didn't think PE was really all that hard/harsh/noisy though I still think it's fantastic. Also, I need advice as to what other cds have the Public Energy and Tri Repeatae qualities that I like. By this I mean that perfect blend of hauntingly beautiful ambient melodies, harsh noises, and driving rhythms. Should I pick up FSOL's Dead Cities next? Thanks.

I can definetly relate to this. Coming from someone who really valued Amber and Basscad, Chiastic Slide was really off-meter and noisy to me *at first*. After I got used, err... aquired it's taste, I love it just as much as the others. I think Ae's albums express a different set of emotions and thoughts about occurences, each track means something, possibly.. but it's interpretation is left to the listener; although they say they make the music so they'll have something to listen to.

I think I have a few beef's with Public Energy #1. The beginning is just wonderful, how he let's more highs in to direct the sound, channeling it in almost a circle (atleast in my car), and than building, and eventually filling it with a lush melody. But than other tracks seem to be very repetitive, such as track 4; it really tires me. I really like Speedy J: G Spot, especially the live disc, and I also very much like Ginger. On another Speedy J side note, I was listening to Ginger today, and I have to ask if the following annoys anyone else: Ginger: Track 10, starting at 02.20, Jochem establishes a really nice flowing beat, up front with a nice variant melody. By 03.00 it's really moving, and really really nice, but at 03.20, he just kills it! Talk about mom walking in on you.

I think Chiastic Slide is noisier than Public Energy #1 on a conventional scale, but than again, who defines "noise?"

Yes, Dead Cities has melody, ambience, and rhythm. I still hated it when I first heard it, and even though my hatred has mellowed a bit, I have major problems with it even now. The main problem, I suppose, is that the 3 qualties you want are all seperated. Half of the tracks are really hard mindless techno, fast and abrasive, but not in a good challenging way--instead in a pop technoish way. Ambient bits are thrown in between every track, but they amount to mostly 20 seconds or so of wank apiece. Then there are some really formless boring ambient/melodic pieces. I'll give it another listen and reassess it soon (maybe tonight), but the album just never worked for me. Sam

I must agree totally with this assessment of Dead Cities, and I adore Lifeforms, but never really gelled with ISDN either. In a similar genre but IMO better, try Third Eye Foundations' "Ghost". Dead Cities is a really amazing disc, but I don't really think it fits in the same category as Tri Repeatae and Public Energy. I see the Autechre and Speedy J records for as impressionistic sound explorations where the listener is given more of a chance to figure out for themselves what the artist trying to come across with. On Dead Cities, everything is alot more clearly spelled out and comes across as a very cinematic record....if you are familiar with FSOL's Lifeforms,imagine what it would be like if a bomb hit that Utopia, and you get kinda a picture of what Dead Cities is like. Have to disagree with Sam on the quality of the music here. Not my favourite FSOL but individual tracks aren't as bad as they're made to sound here. What Dead Cities does lack is flow, continuity, call it what you want but it is very disjointed.

chiastic slide is excellent as well. i've found that with most autechre releases is that they continue to evolve musically, and their next release can often take a bit of geting used to. you can pretty much trust them, though - the only release of their's that i really haven't grown into was the motor ep (under another name). i also strongly recommend the double-single "cichlisuite". absolutely beautiful. has anyone on this list encountered the funkstorung "break art" ep, (michael fakesch & chris de luca)? i've never heard of these people aside from this release, and am so impressed, would love to discover more.. its from a german label "musik aus strom". tom \ \ --\-----stimuli][is \ \ w\ h\ a\n t\e '\x s\t ? / / / -/s -/t -/r -/i -/v /e .

second on the Reload, definitely a good grab. in the crazed vein, though distinctly different from Ae and Speedy (difference is what were looking for, right? repitition has to be pretty sublime to be tollerable), you should check the mego, touch, a musik, mille plateaux, and musik aus strom labels. cd format might be tight, but there is a lot of treats. mego's release by general magic and pita, "live and final fridge," is beat oriented music created by a conspiring kitchen appliance. you'll find yourself wondering if the light really does go off when the door's closed. you'll climb inside to find out and end up rotting with all your produce. it's that good. on touch, the new farmers manual, 'fsck,' is a mindbending concept map for electronic music. very blueprint in nature, all sounds seem very distinct and well placed. tidy but complex, inter-reference rather than interference. kind of a modernist architects take on the entire genre of electronic abstraction. their take on thrash metal about midway through the cd redeem every preteen's fantasies of spurting blood and rocket launching guitars. those boys bought computers. great. the rehberg + bauer sounds promising, but i have yet to hear it. i don't know what a musik has on cd. maybe just the wabi sabi and the L@n. the holosud 12 is a bit noisier. compact lo-fidelity gems. mille plateaux has some intense noise. i think the sidewinder "colonized" was released on mille before being released on virgin. the sidewinder stuff is pretty heavy, pretty caustic, pretty un-pretty. pluramon's "pick up canyon" and the "electric ladyland" comps are worth checking out for some metal twist and buzz. the chrome releases are sweet heaviness, but alas, except for the already recommended panacea, missing from the digital realm. digital hardcore has some acrid heartattack music on the market as well. check the Atari Teenage Riot for some imperfect interface between analogue punk and circuitry. the borg, wetware, the displeased sound your stereo makes when you douse it with a gallon of bile. vvm's "priveleged frames" is keen if you want the weird edge. the new cd comp 01161 (right #?) has got some fucked up moments (and i think a track from someone on the list?). first cut is especially ornery when it hits the punching bag--about a minute of drillbit beats, modulating occasionally, at a steady amphetamine bpm. the sound in your head right before your heart explode. sorry for the vague reviews--at work without access to the music. operating purely from a wasted memory. rw np--joni mitchell: court and spark (huh? righteous).

I lost the original addressee on this thread (sorry!), but I wanted to recommend that they make sure they pick up Speedy J's "Ni Go Snix" single if they liked Public Energy No. 1. It's even more noisy and hard than the album, IMHO.
