And at least drum n' bass hasn't completely stagnated yet. There are plenty of mutating sub-genres. Plus, believe it or not, the jungle kids I know know about squarepusher, etc. Are any other dance based styles making the kind of progress jungle is?

this can actually be substituted by either: ambient house synth washes or house or jazz vibes played in a simple minor chord progression. i was talking to a pal of mine about my tastes in [traditional] drum'n'bass. i LOVE d+b that sounds like hiphop [capone, souljah, lemon d] and jungle that sounds like house [aqua sky, stuff on additive, older moving shadow gear]. but i HATE jungle that sounds like jungle [think creative source + good looking/looking good]. the only exception to this rule is seba + lotek's _so long_. someone mentioned earlier this summer the technical leaps and bounds made by the tech steppers. some of the most exciting gear i'm hearing is from the likes of dominic angus, ed rush, and optical + tuns from the metalheadz, droppin' science, and valve labels. it may seem like traditional techstep to some, but i've noticed a desire to drift away from the use of traditional breaks and more distorted, processed, and produced beats [especially dom's work]. _concrete shoes_ and _12.01_ are two prime tracks for 12" buyers. jungle may get a [deserved] throttling from the press for it's lack of a logical progression, but there are some artists who are pushing boundries and are still receiving club play. my current fave d+b 12"s: neotek - valves [moving shadow] danny breaks - conscience/solar funk [droppin science] dylan - witchcraft/virus [droppin science] dom + optical - quadrant six [moving shadow] dom + roland - hydroliks [moving shadow] optical - to shape the future [metalheadz] dilinja/lemon d - violent killa/12.01 [valve] g.

ahem...pardon me for the naivety, but: i thought the whole point was, that if you can recognize the boundaries in any music style, your sole mission is to thoroughly destroy said boundaries. am i wrong in that assumption? .......
