Dude, buy a record player. What's with you guys? There is no excuse! For the price of a few cd's you can pick up something at the thrift store that will at least play. Do yourself a favor. Being into IDM without owning a turntable is a blind guy going to the movies. Sure you can kind of get the story, but you're missing out on an awful lot... WSB...

i have found that finding a *good* record player for less than $250 has been darn near impossible. i could get any old pioneer sony big loada shit for 100 bucks new and very cheap used, but it's slim pickings elsewhere. though i pick up an old technics at park-n-swap for 20$, which worked for maybe a week. record players, even when you get a good one, tend to be a bitch. and yeah, it's cheap, but i can't imagine being in love with a format that degrades on each use.

I just recently started buying vinyl...it really is WAY more fun than collecting cd's, and cheaper for the most part. There is soooo much interesting weird wacky stuff that made it onto record that you'd never see on cd...and a lot of it is only a couple dollars in used record shops...granted, its usually not IDM that costs this little, but its just fun to collect records you KNOW very few people have(or want). The best of both worlds is ideal. I'll buy cd's AND vinyl from now on. Ali "It means we'll manage I'll master your language And in the meantime I'll create my own" (Tricky)

Well, unlike the other person who replied to this thread, I can afford a turntable...I simply don't want one. Not that I feel as though I have to justify myself, but I got really tired of taping the really good things (of which there were a lot) from vinyl just so I could listen to it in my car and for my walkman. It just became too much of an effort and I don't have that much time anymore. So, aside from the comments like this one, anyone know of anything Gescom-related on CD? Thanks, Chad

If you don't have the time that's understandable. What's cool now though, is that you can put your vinyl not available on CD and burn it on a CD very easily. There are programs that even clean up the sound for you and take out surface noise and pops with the click of a button. Adaptec EZ CD 3.0 has it built into the program expressly for the purpose of transferring vinyl to CD. TDK blank CD's are $3.50 each now-about as cheap as a tape! There is so much great music that is not available on CD and may never be. Not just new IDM 12"s but thousands of older independent releases and some just plain weird and wonderful records that were vinyl only and will likely stay that way. I have hundreds of great records that I would be missing out on without a turntable. A turntable is an absolute must for me. Btw I have an SL1200-MKII and I'm not a DJ. It's a nice table. As for degradation of sound on vinyl records, I have records that are 20-30 years old and sound great. CD's may not last this long. We'll see I guess.... =)

Cool! All I need now is a turntable (for that purist analogue sound!) and then I can transfer that to a digital medium with a cd-recorder! That will only set me back about a $1000! Doesn't this defeat the whole purpose of vinyl? Oh fuck it, I'll just listen to my cds ... and may the war continue ... Oh fuck it, you're right...what was I thinking? Anyone want to buy a couple thousand records cheap? Contact me privately. =) $1000? Umm..you can get a CDR for $300-the price of a decent cassette deck. Good quality turntables can be found used at very good prices as others have pointed out. Transferring to CD defeats the purpose? Of what? Being able to listen to a vinyl-only release on your portable or car CD player, or at work? Or being able to give a friend a copy of a great vinyl release that's impossible to find in *any* format? Sure there are lots of people that are happy with whatever they can find on CD and that's fine. Some of us are a little more adventerous though. Oh, don't bother flaming me as I'm not taking this seriously either......see the ----> =) Heh.

i'm selling a 2x CD recorder for $300. (cos i'm upgrading to an even better one.) blanks are $3.00 or less if you know where to look. np: CD-R i made of a bunch of new vinyl i picked up... :) Yeah, the vinyl version has a sticker saying "complete with surface noise" but I didn't notice it until I bought the CD version (my brother had the vinyl version) and saw the sticker you're referring to. -- Ben Coffer Hybrid Productions http://www.hybridgame.demon.co.uk/

Stuff that!! I made the decision to sell my decks back in late 1989. I haven't looked back! I don't miss out on much that comes out on vinyl that i want because it either get's put on cassette, cdr, or even hi-fi video with visuals. I have 2 Plugs and both AFX's HAB's and Ae's "we r why / are y are we?" on a videotape somewhere with the record labels spinning around as they are played. Not too mention a heap of other rarer stuff on cassette. :) The people that miss out on something is the label and artist, because if this stuff was released on the cd format i would buy it all. Thus the something they miss out on is the money. Though since it's seems labels and artists are happy to release vinyl only releases it's not an unfair assumption (i think) to say that they support home-taping and the tape trading phenomena. This doesn't even take into account the limiting of releases to 200 or some other ridiculously small number, which magnifies the phenomena even more so. More labels should take a leaf out of Mike Banks book and follow his example with Submerge and it's admirable goals, which include keeping most (not all) of what they distribute in continual stock. Regards, John

Well, let's see.... I think it's been about a year now that I have been on this list. The "Is there any GESCOM CD" available?" search has hit the list a multitude of times. Hell, I even joined the quest. I also was fortunate to have a member dub me the best of GESCOM onto a tape. (I love it!) Well, I wouldn't suggest publicizing it!(Whooops!) I would regard it in the same vein as dubbing for a friend. If I had a turntable and a CDR, I wouldn't hesitate to spread the GESCOM vibe!!!

Ethical or not, I would buy this in an instant. I know that *someone* out there must have done it. By starting this whole mess in the first place, I was actually hoping that someone would just privately offer to burn me a copy of theirs. Anyone? Chad

I see nothing unethical about having a pirated gescom CD, considering that a) I don't have a turntable, and thus won't buy them b) If I ever get a turntable, I will buy them What's wrong with that? I don't take away any profit, I only generate it by playing the music for my friends. If they like it & have turntables, they can buy it. I certainly wouldn't copy it for them. 'Sides, how different is it from tape, not really.. Yeesh! I really wish it could be released on cd, I would snatch it up! On Thu, 7 August 1997, at 00:45:22, Chad Burkey wrote:
