'Ancient Lights And The Blackcore' is actually the title of another Sub Rosa compilation. It's a weird mix of stuff: Track listing: 1. Scorn - Naked Sun (11:12) 2. Seefeel - As If (6:10) 3. Seefeel - As Track (4:18) 4. Seefeel - As Well (1:34) 5. Yanomami Shamanising - Group Healing (rec by David Toop, Amazon rainforest 1978) (8:20) 6. Timothy Leary/DJ Cheb I Sabbah - Why Are You Here? (15:06) The CD is subtitled 'Electric Dreams: Shamanism, Music & Intoxication', which explains everything, doesn't it? Sub Rosa have been going for some years now in quite a low-key way, but they're well worth investigating if you're into the Touch/Staalplaat/austere Electronica/experimental sampling end of things. Increasingly they've been dovetailing more with idm-type stuff, especially with their Gilles Deleuze tribute, 'Folds & Rhizomes' (conceived before the philosopher's death, apparently), and Scanner's 'Sulphur', a live album (very quietly mastered, unfortunately) recorded in 1995 at London's South Bank Centre. They've now got proper press and distribution in the UK at last, and there's going to be a Sub Rosa live night in London on Sunday 12 May, with Scanner, Main, and American sampling dude David Shea (whose 'Tower Of Mirrors' CD SR94 is also well worth investigating).

A few reviews of some music new to me that I've recently been wrapping my ears around - including alternate opinions on stuff already discussed and some not so new bits and pieces, but anyway - here goes /// All opinions are totally subjective, so please don't flame, kill, maim or disfigure ::: ANIMALS ON WHEELS : Designs and Mistakes (Ninja Tune) Oweeeeee!!! This is *it*. All that's been said about this and more holds true : an excellent release and so late in the year a definite contender for my favourite album out of '97. Swirly, swishy, swoopy in places, meaty, beaty, big 'n bouncy in others - atmospheric, innovative, reflective, eclectic - it's all here (and I can't spot the moniker's mistakes). Brilliant. Geddit. NOW. AS ONE : Planetary Folklore (Mowax) Still very new to me and unexplored, though "21st Century Soul's" recent utterance that this was 'one of those seminal albums' somewhat surprises me. It immediately strikes me as far more interesting and varied than last year's The Message in Herbie's Shirts and has excellent moments on it - but maybe it's a grower. I'll play it again, Sam. (Q: Why is this Mowax and other As One material comes out on Clear?) FLUKE : Risotto (Astralwerks) Yes ! Serve up a big dish of this - it's hot ! My recent question posed to this list about it netted mixed reviews and somebody likened it to Underworld. Though that wouldn't have sprung to my mind, I can see where it's coming from. Okay, so stick Underworld and Orb/livion into a blender and give the whole blend a Deep Dish sheen and off you go. Maybe that's not entirely fair... hard to categorise, but certainly an enjoyable (and melodic) listen. Not for those of you who love unmitigated noizz. BILL LASWELL MEETS STYLE SCOTT INNA - Dub Meltdown (WordSound Recordings) Well - trying to be nice here - the best thing about this is the actual green and black disc itself. Kewl :-/ As for the content [sigh] Mr. Laswell sure churns 'em out convenyor belt style and this one is certainly going to be enhanced by the mean green combustible, but no, I wouldn't even want it thumping in the Kombi while watching the boyz surf. Boring to the n-th, dubby noodling with pretentious titles. It's been done before and better. DROME : Dromed (Kiff) This German 'techno explorer' gentleman, Bernd Friedmann, was somebody new to me and I'm glad to have made his acquaintance. Ice cool ambient dubby tr*ph*p IDEAL to drift off on happy somnolent journeys to. Let the 50 minutes run, then push 'repeat' - you won't regret it, as it lulls your mind into a fuzzy state of woozy wellbeing. Oooooh, nice. SUBROSA : Underwood (SubRosa) This '96 sampler features an interesting slew of culprits : Seefeel / Scanner / MoM / Islamic Diggers / Mick Harris / Bill Laswell et al. Opening track is supplied by N^us (who?) : a sublimely beautiful and haunting song titled "Lament" but the voice is Tom Jones does Peter out of Type O Negative. Pity, because it's actually the standout track here. These rest come and go without grabbing my by the ankle, although I do seem to have been playing it rather a lot. Only jarring appearance comes from Laibach, who seem to be a little out of place amongst the others on offer. OLIVE : Miracle (EP) (BMG) Not my usual fare, this, but worth a look-in due to its 6 mixes and running time of 40 minutes. After the predictably pedestrian Radio Edit & Extended mixes, we get the Deep Dish Miracle of Dub Remix which throbs and ebbs and swells beautifully, then into the Monkey Mafia remix, which punches and steams, followed by Roni Size's kickin' remix, this EP's killa - complete with deliberate staccato stuck-CD-sound cut-ups and then into Black Olive's Deeper Dub final track... not bad all in all. DEATH IN VEGAS : Twist & Crawl EP (Deconstruction) Bit of a letdown for someone who adored Dead Elivs. Here we have the magnificent ska track the British Beat originally did with lots of rasta rapping but minus the melody line. Two short mixes : Edit & Full Mix. No surprises here, but yeah ... good for a party. Tracks 3 & 4 are Opium Shuffle off the album - Dead Elvis mix, followed by Mankey Mafia mix (they get around, huh?!) No, I'm not sorry I've got this (pretty cover!) but I'll reserve it for manic moods when only the *loudest* will do, and I can dance myself into an anonymous stupor in my bedroom..... nuff said :-) Thanks for your time. *************************** SUBSTAR ************************* "Incomplete without surface noise" - Autechre

Also - Underwood II is out now at a nice reduced sampler price. As well as having some software for the PC and Mac (which is a multimedia track by David Shea and Robert Hampson which I haven't tried because for the Mac you need to install new CD software and I'm pretty happy with what I've got thankyouverymuch) there's unexclusive tracks by bisk, bill laswell feat. ninj, scanner, tone rec, oval vs main (utterly fantastic), and mick harris/eraldo bernocchi (extremely dark and lovely). I'm pretty sure Sub Rosa are on the web somewhere but I forget where for the moment. I'll have a wee look later if it helps... Rubyjune.

BENGE The Very Best Of... SR167 (cd) Benge started recording music in 1995 after leaving art college. He was a painter of large minimal abstract canvasses, but defected to music because he found it wasn't as messy. Since the age of 10 he had been a drummer in various experimental bands, but eventually decided to go it alone because he liked the idea of being in control of every sound and every idea; thus he started his own label and started releasing albums. Musical Philosophy: using old and new technology to produce unique and beautiful music without relying on other people at any stage of the creative process. File under: Relevant Ambient Revivalist After 7 albums of unique electronica released on his own label and recorded in his electronic studio based in the heart of London, England, Benge shares now with Sub Rosa his vision through favorite tracks from his five first records, on an album outrageously called "The Very Best Of…" and packaged in the grand tradition of seminal listening music albums. In an attempt to reconcile the sound of machines dreaming of electric shapes floating on magnetic clouds with an updated musical expression of the <<vintage>>'s warmth, the British sandman invites you to the land of electronic meditation. Regarding his direct and 'reduced to the essential' style, Benge is the missing link between the 70's melodic 'electronica' and the present 'intelligent' electro wizards. Nevermind his 'you know who' look alike on the sleeve, you won't find any traces or evidence of 'supermarket' music, or maybe an illustration of what it will be like in the year 3000… Why not dim the lights, put on "the Very Best of… " and join Benge for a glass of fine wine! _____________________________________ Pietro Da Sacco, m b m @ n e t c o r e . c a ::: Grooves Magazine ::: ::: Experimental Electronica in Words ::: http://www.rain.org/~audio/grooves/ ::: Insound.com Zinestand ::: http://www.insound.com/zinestand/grooves/

Another one from Freeform! This time on Sub Rosa, check out the news brought to you by Dutch East India. I hope you appreciate my cut and paste manoeuvre's! : ) Pietro. FREEFORM Green Park SR149 (cd) / SRV149 (limited edition LP vinyl) File under: incredibly strange groovy electronica Freeform is the extremely free and open minded doppelganger from Simon Pyke, the prolific English musician. Sampled by Howie B and getting credits for it!; appearing everywhere the action is: Skam, Warp, Worm Interface, Language (on Electric Kingdom as Nudge), Law and Auder, Chocolate Industries (beside Funkstorung, Autechre, Bisk, etc.) Freeform is a 'non-linear' electronician, experimenting and investigating every aspect of electronic music, as should be! For his new album under the Sub Rosa banner, Freeform is playing with the world of acoustic sources... Creating a toy box ready to be opened for fun and pleasure, forget about Pandora's box. Action! Exoticism! Weird things from outer space! Simon Pyke AKA Freeform is guiding, whoever listens to this strange and amazingly beautiful album, to unknown countries. "Green Park" is filled with the sound of a gamelan ensemble facing the gateway to King Kong's lair, with the astonishing sound from futuristic samba anthems, and sometimes with neo-expressionist lullabies close to the Residents. An incredible soundtrack for a movie to create while listening -eyes shut- to this album, the source of inspiration for a Roger Corman James Bond-like featuring exotic dancers abducted by pink and purple aliens while having psychedelic dreams under a snow storm in Bali. This time there will be a rumble in the quiet electronic village, and nobody to save this Island Earth, at last! Looking back to Freeform's already thick discography, one might say that "Green Park" is once again a magical neologism, a habit that Simon Pyke will surely not abandon that soon. If you thought you knew Freeform have a walk in this Green Park and be sure things might change a little bit! -- MATI:K Mati:k SR162 (cd) / SRV162 (lp) File under: bangin' melodic electronica After the concrete experimentalism from Bisk, and the unique and the introspective hip-hop from Multiphonic Ensemble, taste without any restriction (no side-effect detected) the electronic melodies from Mati:k (aka Masanobu Yanagida); you won't believe this guy is a newcomer! Following the albums from Bisk, Multiphonic Ensemble and Rom=Pari, here is the latest Sub Rosa Japanese sensation: Mati:k. For his first album, Masanobu Yanagida chose to explore a very personal approach to the world of electro-oriented music: crushed and distorted beats mixed with an accurate sense of melodies placed in an open field. Far from the Japanese hectic archetype, Mati:k is the perfect remedy to avoid the claustrophobic aspects of electro. Be ready to face a world full of contradictory sensations, constantly mutating through its intensity and straight electronic orientation, far from the usual 'human machines don't think or feel attitude'. As a Wishmaster, Mati:k will provide the necessary energy when you are down, and the quietness deserved to face the stress, but don't expect him to show you the 'way' to follow; listen and you will find the answers. "For his first album, Mati:k, offers a true delight for LFO, Boom Boom Satellites or Ken Ishii fans! An album filled with lots of influences, integrated and reinterpreted in order to reach an highly personnal and unique universe full of tracks ready to be mixed in a DJ set, beside classics like LFO's "Tied Up", Ishii's "Extra"... far from the usual hectic or "kitschy" japanese cliché, electro but not radicaly techno, this opus is ready to face dancefloor's purists as well as the @ home "chill-out" listening envies!!!!!" ___________________________________________ p i e t r o d a s a c c o a u d i o - n i m b u s 9745 lynngrove cr, windsor, ontario, n8r 1b8, canada http://www.rain.org/~audio/grooves/ grooves experimental electronics music mag

The sub rosa site is currently 'under construction' so you wont find any helpful info there now. But, for future reference, the url is: http://www.subrosa.be/ Regarding when the mati:k release hit the streets, it was in November of 1999. -->-Lance--- lance@inaudible.com p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
