This past week I came across something I think most of you would enjoy quite a bit.... a (bootleg) compilation of 'greatest hits' from a late 70s new york label called 99 records..... the music on this double vinyl set is amazing. (think of it as a missing link) some of these tunes sound a bit like laika except much more jammier, dancier and w/ a bit of can thrown in...(keep in mind this was made in the funk/disco era...) the drumming is great....its all live but sounds like its been programmed in a lot of places....(there's a jungle cut-and-paste feel to some of the beats). basically if this music came out today people would be doing flips... curiously, the label says 45 rpm but the songs sound 'normal' on 33 (some on 45 are insanely breaky drill n' bassy nutty). lots of live bass grooves, bells and drones. buy on sight. other really good things: Canada by Repeat on Unexplored beats - (mark broom + plaid?) Funkbwitu - Buckfunk 3000 - language - super funky bass, second song sounds very vibert influenced to my ears (w/ nice plucked strings and nice beat work). the begg man striketh again. Fink Funk - N-tone # 23 one bit sounds like tipsy....the rest is dense, wacky, thick down tempo. very nice sampling and well worth tracking down. jury man 4 is also purty good...nice jazz breaks.

99 Records ... actually an early 80's New York label ... and record store ... named because the store was at 99 MacDougal St. ... owned by Ed Bahlmann ... Famous for being the home of the Bush Tetras (the historical antecedents of Luscious Jackson) and E.S.G. (whose "UFO" has been sampled by more Rap and other Techno/Trip-Hop artists than just about anyone else) ... E.S.G. released a 12" that was a dual release with Factory Records, produced by Martin Hannett (99-04/FAC-34) ...

I've recived a lot of requests for a track listing and info on this comp.... there's no detailed info given as its a bootleg and I'm sure whoever made it dont want any trouble so everything's purty anonymous. The name of the comp is 99 records - greatest hits - the garage years and upon closer examination all the tracks are either by esg or liquid liquid. Doh! Forgot about Liquid Liquid ... they cut 2 12" EPs for 99 Records that I know of in '81 ...

I remember John Peel playing Favorite Sweater from this - a very fine song. No doubt enhanced in his book by the fact of it's being a seven-inch. Liquid Liquid also featured, I think. After a proper listen I've decided that the new Biosphere album is very good indeed. You'll be disappointed if you expect anything resembling the upbeat numbers from the last one. In fact there are hardly any beats at all (not a problem for me). There's even a bit of singing/talking and some relaxed guitar strumming (heavily chorussed, of course). Lots of environmental noise/ambience etc. I thought the more trancey tracks of his earlier release were much less successful on the whole so I'm pleased with this apparent new direction. It's brooding without being as hermetic as much of what I'm forced to refer to as dark ambient. The new Cristian Vogel is also good but I haven't listened much yet. Kirk Degiorgio is interviewed in this month's Wire and comes across as still maintaining the level of arrogance evinced previously. Still like his music though. What can he mean, kids, when he refers to Aphex and Squarepusher as tokens of 'Perverse Modernity' similar to Damien Hirst? Who would credit it etc. Hirst is something of a charlatan, but there's no need to slur James and Jenkinson with that tag. adam
