[snip] What happened to that excellent plaid remix of Perfection on the Softballetformsremix CD? Probably the best plaid track I've ever heard.... Say what? Music For Adverts is the BEST Black Dog album, hands down. It has maturity, cohesiveness and a very different sound. All the others just sound like a bunch of songs by different people with some seques trying to tie them together (though Bytes does the best job of tieing together, adn Temple Of Transparent Balls has the best songs. Spanners is cool in a difficult listening way (listen 10 times before you like, or love it). You'll go broke fast trying to track down all the remixes. I'd buy the albums, and the Reload Le Sol Et La Mer remix first. Che

Dear Henrik,
quoted 1 line it sux.> it sux.
well, thanks a lot for that. a nice impartial critique of a piece of work that took me a year of my life to complete. you're entitled to your opinion (of course), but to belittle *my* solo LP to an interested newcomer in two words, deserves full flame factor 8. IMHO.

"its all becoming clear" where your allegiance is. "Music for adverts" represents the "NEW" Black Dog sound. those that don't like that can fuck off and buy plaid and aphex records to their hearts content. it's a free world. really. Bah.... rdj has been getting facelifts from day one. From the ambient doodles of saw1, organic soundscapes of saw2, hardtrance of polygon window and splintering shrapnel of Ventolin. I've always felt Black Dog have had a consistently appealing and challenging sound.... while rdj's releases were neato flavours of the month. Here's an odd analogy: if IDM was a carbohydrate, rdj would be a sweet candy floss, and black dog would be a big, freshly-baked loaf of wheat bread. :) onnow: sunscreem (mmm, candy floss....) i'm going to say yes on this one. maybe it doesn't stand up to the bytes lp, which is after all the best record anyone will ever make on this planet, but for me it has something which is unique amongst a deluge of formula-driven clinical muzak. plaid may make pleasing noises, but it doesn't have very much that resonates *within* me, it just sounds way too cold and academic to even compare to the classic tbd material, which adverts is a great deal closer to imho. i think adverts is a lot better than the people here on idm give it credit for. it might have dull production in places, but production isn't everything, and at least ken is playing with the formulas, trying to make something new

reload is a must buy, whether it's the short stories lp or the new archive ep. alec empire, well i don't see much appeal in his records. you could do a lot worse than the new lps by squarepusher autechre or as one. or get hold of herbie hancock's headhunters lp which is on a reissue at the moment, and discover where all these techno guys stole their ideas from ;-) np - arpeggiator - the durutti column ~~~ Through universes of worlds of shadows, S G the subconscious geography remains a constant. ~~~ Makyo 622AD

Hi Ben, Hi People,
quoted 1 line it's a free world.>> it's a free world.
> Well I like all three, so where does that leave me? at liberty to choose. To a lot of people i appear bitter and angry, i realise that. To them i would say that I am just standing up for my rights as an independent and free willed artist. And yes, i *am* bloody angry. BUT I'VE BEEN LIKE THAT SINCE BIRTH. I am going to shut up now, I've said my piece, and i've got constructive things like live gigs, and new material to prepare. Some of you will probably 'dislike' me even more after this latest outburst, but I'm ultimately not bothered, as it's not about "sales". You may 'vote me off' the list if you wish, as I don't even feel like an IDM musician anymore. The boundaries of "what is acceptable" have become too fixed, and the same old pap is being trundled out for your delectations. It's sad. The music of TBD is the music of deserts, hills, and sacred groves. The spaces of contemplative humanity. Beyond the day to day press of so called civilisation, and hangable autobulbs. Those that "dig the sound", will dig the sound. And i thank them for that. Cheers, Ken ps, your 'reply' boinged. please send me a tape, though TBD is (currently) full. -- + . /\___/\ . * | < The Black Dog > | + * . . * . . * (. .) + | | . * . * + ___ooO__\-/__Ooo___ | | + + + + . /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ | Dogma >> | http://www.feedback.com/tbd/ * 3-5-3 * (Dis)information > | tbd@feedback.com

You're right, you do appear so, but hell, so do most people here =)

Well, I got Spanners a while back (rather unfortunately for me on vinyl, as cd would have allowed me to listen to it @ work... just don't understand why they will let me have a cd player, but no turntable there...) I REALLY liked (like, I suppose, as I'm in a perpetual state of like with this album) it... as somewhat hokey as the above 'of deserts, hills and sacred grooves' description sounds, its sort of what I got from it. I feel comfortable grouping Autechre & Aphex together, but (at least with this particular release) TBD is just different. Comparision is futile. Like comparing Atari Teenage Riot to a Rozz Williams spoken word... ANYWAYS... what other Black Dog would one recommend in this vein... (yes, I know that I did just miss a big old thread on Black Dog releases...) Any leads would be greatly appreciated (selling off stuffs today for credit @ a local store, TBD being one of my 'top o' the list items') Completely unrelated and probably setting myself up for a flame or two, I listened to a RealAudio broadcast of the Orb last night... It was pretty damn good... __________________________________________ sfwd@sonic.net LToN DiY Noise.Ambient.Techno.Industrial HomeRecordings & Such 4 Cheap ($3) http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ (add your wasted time to our catalog)
