I've thought this too; those synths really do sound good. Every Day has
found a permanent place in my heart. Have you heard the Elecktroids
album? They like to use synths like these, especially in Mystery World
which I think is supposed to sound like Scooby Doo accoding to
Select magazine. Drexciya's Journey Home is another track to listen to
if you haven't already. It sounds wonderfully nostalgic. I also think Mike
Paradinas' melodic stuff strikes the same chord as the synths on these
tracks do.
I hope all that made sense; my English leaves a lot to be desired
sometimes. There was a request about a week ago for a review of the
Swim Immersion remixes and I was fortunate enough to pick up a
copy for 2 pounds so here goes:
|swim~12 Immersion Remixes Vol. 3
|1995.5 / Swim Vwm 4.3
|Jon Ryman. Pablo Castrati. Paul Schutze. Cylob.
(No Surrender double)
Jon Ryman kicks off with what I would consider a boring track. The style
makes me think of Salt Tank or Orbital or something not too experimental
like that. I haven't heard anything on Swim before so I can't compare these
to the originals, if there are any. This track's alright except I don't
really go
for those uplifting snare build-ups that sound like they're taken from some
dodgy house tune. The synths are quite nice tho.
(Immersion "Sub Mix")
Next is Pablo Castrati on the remix. I don't know who either of these first
two are, and this track is weird. It's a bit more daring than the opening
track but still sounds fairly alien to me because it's not very electronic
sounding, and some foreign bird starts rambling on at the end.
(Sea Level)
Definitely the side of my preference, kicked off by Paul Schutze.
Tremendous
bass on this track and at times it's a bit too much for the vinyl cos the
tonearm starts resonating and the treble goes all warbly. Paul's given this
track a dark and spatious feel, and I think it's lovely.
(Envelope)
Lastly Cylob which is more what I'm used to. I must admit I was expecting
something much harder when I heard Cylobian Sunset, or at least something
weirder even though it's an incredible album. This remix has restored my
faith in Mr Jeffs' hunger for odd sounds, which is what it is for most of
the
track. Some of those noises sound like a ZX Spectrum's interpretation of a
helicopter. After that noise workout the track chills out a bit with
distorted
voices and the trademark Chris Jeffs melody. Fucking excellent! Does
anyone know of any of his other work that's weird like this apart from
Industrial Folk songs and the Kinesthesia EPs?
Ta Ta for now
