I think the influence of IDM and the techno-umbrella on rock music is on-topic. We've been discussing it for a while. The new U2 album has little-to-nothing to do with the topic of this list, except that the album makes clear that U2 understand the importance of electronics in modern music. They appreciate and have absorbed the music we discuss here. Same with Bowie. That aspect is worthy of discussion too. As for the observation (or complaint) that the 4 bandmembers aren't responsible for the programming: At worst I could say if you care enough you get the best available people to cover for you. Or I could say that if you have a vision but lack the technical skills to see it all the way through, you find someone to assist. We could also complain that most rock bands don't operate the tape machines and mixers like I do for myself. On the other hand if I had the kind of budget U2 have, I'd hire someone else too. first of all...i don't consider U2 breaking any boundries with this new album. there isn't enough electronics (read: synth) to be considered anything remotely close to idm. the *new* U2 is less electronic than jesus jones, emf, early carter usm, etc. those three bands were considered popular in the early 90s. not popular as in stadium-fillers, but pretty known among people into the english scene. anyway, what i'm saying is this...the media didn't pay much attention to the electronics in jesus jones' debut cd "liquidizer", nor their sophomore effort, and not even their 3rd cd (which was absolutely incredible, imho). but now suddenly, when a band uses the slightest bit of synth, it's the *new thing*. i'm sure most of you don't care much for any of the 3 bands i listed...it's your problem...i'm just using them for comparison purposes. this "electronica" has been going on for quite some time. the media just recently discovered this. bowie's latest album is pretty darn good (again, imho). and you know what...i loved the prodigy back in '91...and still do to this day. peace... prymal p.s. anyone remember altern-8? the shamen? eskimo's in egypt? baby ford? eon? those were the days. ======== Prymal primal@interaccess.com http://www.interaccess.com/primal/ ======== A NEW JANUARY - CD debut, "Patchwork Shadows" electronic dance with a driving edge http://www.interaccess.com/primal/january/ ======== add some spice to your christ...necco wafers!

I just heard this single again the other day, must've been a good five years or so since I last heard it. It's actually not that bad is it? -- Ben Coffer Hybrid Productions http://www.hybridgame.demon.co.uk/

Oh yes... and how about Guru Josh, N-Joi, EMF, and all the other half-baked acts of the nascent techno/dance scene. I'm quite pleased with how far behind in the rear view mirror that bunch are, thank you very much :-) Ashok (Have to admit though that I still get a kick out of Fortran 5's "Love Baby" and Baby Ford's "OOO", though)
