My apologies to anyone offended by the Canada-centredness of this message. I figure that 3 or 4 messages talking about R U Experienced is just a drop in the bucket compared to the dozens and dozens that we saw about AMP... :-)
quoted 2 lines As has been mentioned, the start of MM's r u recieving was absolute bollocks> As has been mentioned, the start of MM's r u recieving was absolute bollocks > with Kim Clarke Chapness and voice distortion.
So was the end... "Good music, like the truth, is out there..." Gag.
quoted 2 lines The show rolled along as such...> The show rolled along as such... > FSOL - commentary regarding technology and music etc. (shut up!)
They also showed the vid for Cascade. Good.
quoted 1 line Sven Vath - ??? (too many dolphins)> Sven Vath - ??? (too many dolphins)
Yeah, lame stuff. The only Vath stuff I've ever grooved on have been the remixes by other folks. Bad.
quoted 1 line Orbital (loads of slow breakbeats)> Orbital (loads of slow breakbeats)
The Box. Very nice video, I'd never seen it before. Good.
quoted 1 line Underworld - Channel Six (I wonder why this doesn't get more airplay in Toronto)> Underworld - Channel Six (I wonder why this doesn't get more airplay in Toronto)
The title is actually Dirty Epic. I would've rather seen Cowgirl which I've heard is a better video, but it was still OK.
quoted 1 line LFO - Tricky Disco> LFO - Tricky Disco
Not bad, but a little dated. I would've prefered something from Advance. So-so.
quoted 1 line Speedy J - something from g-spot> Speedy J - something from g-spot
Not a bad track, but cliched video. So-so.
quoted 1 line ??> ??
I think this was when they showed the Chem Bros/Oasis thing. First time I'd heard it (I was purposely avoiding the single), and it wasn't as bad as I'd feared it would be. Nice video, too, with some evil looking touches. Good.
quoted 1 line Underworld (again?!)> Underworld (again?!)
They were supposed to have an online chat with Darren Emerson during the show which is why they showed so much Underworld. This was something off of "Second Toughest", I think. It was OK.
quoted 1 line Moby talks shite> Moby talks shite
Yeah. I was really worried that they'd show a Moby video after this... thank god (no pun intended) they didn't.
quoted 1 line ???> ???
Something called UK Bassheads, I think. Rave-style crap.
quoted 1 line Prodigy - Firestarter> Prodigy - Firestarter
Eh. Could've done without this.
quoted 1 line Plastikman> Plastikman
Obviously, Much was trying to pad the show with some CanCon. Awful track and awful video. Bleah.
quoted 1 line Autechre - ??? (something from Incunabula)> Autechre - ??? (something from Incunabula)
Basscadet. Pretty generic computer animation stuff. Would've rather seen the Second Bad Vibel vid that everyone has been raving about.
quoted 1 line Size 9 - ??? (techno fodder)> Size 9 - ??? (techno fodder)
The track was crap, but I liked the video. Nicely filmed paranoia thing.
quoted 1 line Jaydee - PlastikDreams> Jaydee - PlastikDreams
I have no *idea* whay they played this. Total shite. It was so bad I stopped taping the show, rewound to the beginning of this video, and started again when it finished.
quoted 1 line CJ Bolland (whatever happened to this guy?)> CJ Bolland (whatever happened to this guy?)
He's got a new album coming out, this track is from it. Not my cup o' tea, but the video was nice.
quoted 1 line Orbital> Orbital
"Halcyon". Very... um, interesting.
quoted 1 line Underworld - Born Slippy> Underworld - Born Slippy
I was Underworlded out by this point.
quoted 1 line Overall it was a good show.> Overall it was a good show.
I disagree. They got it about half right. Drop the rave style stuff, add some Aphex and such, drop the repetition (i.e. no more than one vid per artist unless it's a special feature) and get rid of the KCC intro/outro and it could be a solid show. Than again, considering that it appears to have been a one-time thing, I guess the point is pretty much moot. Greg

I'm just curious: Which plastikman song/video did they show? I've never seen a single one, but I'm surprised by this dismal review. Can anybody elaborate as to this? Maybe a quickie review of the video? Curious, Bill/dj marathon

Well first off, I don't really like Hawtin's work much, so I'm sort of biased to start with. But even if I did like the music, the video was just sad - poorly done computer animation consisting mainly of footage of the little Plastikman logo-guy moving slowly around. Booooo-ring. Greg

I've got a taped copy of AMP - if anyone got the MuchMusic show on videotape, I'd love to do a swap. Thanks, Cid.

the fact that they managed to get it half right was good enough for me. Look how bad it could have been! I don't even want to imagine. (allow the image of electric circus enter your mind....shudder) Good point re: repetition. (God knows idm isn't repetitious itself.) If this was to be more than a one off thing, repeating artists would be fine for a little "spotlight" on a certain artist each show. KCC...I know he can be cool...I know he can. Just drop the distortion...and were his eyes closed? I was sitting far from the TV. Open your eyes mate!

I don't know what they showed but I've seen two Plastikman videos -- "Spaz" from X-MIX-3 which is average and then the wonderful "Plastique" video with the real, ultra-cool Plastikman (the one on the cover of "Musik") in it!

You don't get the point. Plastikman gives you PLASTIK. The computer animation is not poor, it's minimalistic. I would have to agree with the second comment. Obviously made for the viewer who is not quite sober of mind. Is that plastikman figure really moving or is that my head playing games with me again :P

Anyone check out Much Music's R U Receiving on Friday night? It was their worst line up yet (of the three I've seen). Only worthwhile tunes were Orbital and Massive Attack. -- Dave Ross: Mild-mannered banker at dawn, exhausted Luddite by evening. http://www.mts.net/~daveross
