Let's talk about compilations: I don't buy them any more very often, since I either want a 12" with the good bits, or a CD that's good all the way through. Compilations seem doomed to be hit or miss. Either they have tracks available elsewhere, or they include original tracks that are pretty much outtakes. Why give a track to a compilation if it's good enough to go on your own release? Submerge, on the other hand, has performed an amazing public service with their Depth Charge compilation series. Each one is a snapshot of more or less recently released tracks from the Detroit techno universe. These tracks are the real deal -- I've got some of them on vinyl, and whoever compiled this generally took the top track off the 12". So you get amazing pieces like Octave One's ENIAC, The Martian's "Ghost Dancer," and Black Nation's "Homeboy." At any rate it's "Depth Charge 4" (Various artists) Submerge Cat SCD4. At all finer record emporiums worldwide or order it from the source at submerge@msen.com. Track list: Alpha UR040 -- Mad Mike (an Overture of sorts) ENIAC -- Octave One The Cosmic Courier -- M5003MB -- Juan Atkins/Maurizio/Thomas Fehlman (woohoo!) Re-synthesize -- Thomas Barnett Ghostdancer -- the Martian (from Red Planet 6) One Step Beyond -- Gigi Galaxy Posatronix -- Posatronix (606 fueled Electro madness) Inversions -- Andre Holland Big Trouble Mix -- Project X (Sean Deason and Mr. Bill) Perfect Skin -- DJ T-1000 Homeboy -- Vice (off of Black Nation -- a label to watch) Phantom -- Gig Galaxy The Edge of Infinity -- Missing Channel --------------------------------------------------------------------- "i love the smell of new carpet. it makes me dizzy. just like when you fall in love." -- Mike Dvorkin Home Page, featuring Reagan on Black Velvet, the EMP Compilation CD, samples of my music, etc http://soli.inav.net/~kent/ Kent Williams kent@inav.net CADSI 2651 Crosspark Road Coralville IA 52241 (319) 338 6053 (home) (319) 626 6700 x 219 (work) (319) 626 3488 (fax)
