Finally got to see Memories, the 'new' (actually from '95 or '96) anime from Katsuhiro Otomo, creator of Akira. The ending theme over the credits is a huge monster techno thing; I think it's by Takkyu Ishino, called "In Yer Memories". Does anyone know where I can find this tune on CD? And is it representative of Ishino's stuff? The anime, BTW, is excellent, a must for any fan of anime and cinema for that matter. I don't know where you can get it, but I'll tell you something: I remember the guys in front of me in the line up (Vancouver International Film Fest) mentioning that they'd have to sit through the whole thing just to hear this one song, and joking about going down to the front of the theatre for four or five minutes to dance at the end.

Absolutely. The hairs on the back of my neck were tingling in anticipation. And at that first hard crunch of the logo sound effects, yeah, it was great. <IDM Rant> I wish there were more live electronic shows out here. There is a live night at one club, but that usually is less interesting techno played almost exclusively by sequencers, with an occasional human manning such instruments as "mixer" or "filter cutoff/resonance knobs". Occasionally they'll have some decent acts, such as Speedy J or maybe decent local stuff, but those shows are quite sparse. I know bitching about it here will do nothing, and maybe it's better than I state, but the guys that played last time were pretty bad (for me anyways, there seemed to be people dancing when I left), and maybe my /memories/ are skewed because of them. Send me an Autechre, an AFX, a FSOL, a u-ziq, a HIA, a Tetsu Inoue, a Black Dog, an Air Liquide, and a Wagon Christ to go please. Or do I have to come and get them? </IDM Rant> Jeff. -- Jeff Macht (jamacht@pobox.com) |"Dreams become reality when desire http://www.pobox.com/~jamacht/ | transforms them into concrete action", NeXT Mail, MIME accepted | Gus, from the film The Top of his Head.

A-ha, it must be on that CD I saw somewhere this weekend - "Memories," by Takkyu Ishino. ;) Takkyu keeps himself busy with his techno/electronic group Denki Groove, and also remixing lots of local (Japanese) pop/rock songs. I personally am not familiar with his own stuff, since the only thing I've heard so far is a remix (by someone else) of Denki Groove's last single, "Niji." (The remix was very good, tho!) He does have several albums out, under D.Groove and also solo. He also writes a funny techno review column for a Japanese TV guide magazine. :) Satoko NP: Ken Ishii - "Stretch" EP (Japan) - I just bought this yesterday, when I found out that only the Japanese edition had the "Extra" remixes. Have these been released over there? Extra (Dave Angel Remix), Extra (Luke Slater Remix), Extra (Wagon Christ Remix)... ************************************************** Satoko Takatomi takatomi@mars.dtinet.or.jp (home sweet home) takatomi.s@pg.com (weekdays, 9-5) **************************************************

OK, so Macross Plus was on on the other night and in one scene, just before the first Sharon Apple news conference, you see this bus pull up in front of an ad. In the split second before the ad changes to the Sharon Apple logo, I would swear I saw AFX and the AFX logo. Maybe I'm delusional. But if someone with a good VCR capable of freeze frame wants to take a peek, I'd be really interested in in knowing :] Graham NP: Ken Ishii - "Overlap" EP (Japan) - Hrm. Okay, this is directed to all you (probably a scant handful, mind you) idmers who watch anime and are familiar with japanese techno pop... Here goes...On the Macross Plus Soundtrack II (not the orchestral one) there are two songs: "Idol Talk" and "Pulse"...I am madly in love with these tunes!!! Can anyone out there tell me what techno-pop bands from Japan have this sound?? I would be greatly in your debt...Well, unless of course you were wrong, and then I would have to hunt you down and kill you for persuading me to shell out $50 for some crappy Japanese import...;) khannan suntharam kxs28972@bayou.uh.edu

Those remixes were on the original Extra CD single from R&S, I believe, and now have been added to the Stretch EP in Japan. What does Denki Groove sound like, BTW? I've seen loads of their CDs in the Japanese CD shops, but never picked one up.
