This is great but it seems to be something that they have aprpriated from Japanese design. I often see Japanese magazines that use the english language in the same way. The use depends more on the aesthetic appearence of a word and the meaning of a word rather than whether or not it means anythiong within the context of theme.

In the Emigre DR issue, they discuss DR's fascination with Japan and Japanese graphics a bit. One of the Designers Republicans mentions that not only do they use Japanese kana characters, but they invent random characters that look like Japanese characters.

I was wondering about this too - just what the heck is the word? Brain? IMHO, DR have become really good at what has become the "recognizably Japanese" look - perhaps even better at it than a lot of Japanese designers. Maybe having the distance (geographically and culturally) helps them abstract and purify what they find in Japanese culture and design. The only other one I've seen is the Wipeout XL/2097 "Soundtrack" CD. I like the DR covers because of the Japanese words they throw in there as part of the artwork. Most of them is stuff like "Warp" and "Designers Republic" in Japanese, but some are quite random, like the word on the edge of the Wipeout CD spine. If you were wondering what it meant (if you knew it was a word), it's Japanese for "Makeup." Ooookay... Another thing in Japanese they have on DR covers I've seen (Blechdottir and Wipeout) is "Brain," phonetically speaking (it could just as well be Brane, Blain, Blane, etc.). On the Blech CD, you see it right next to the title, as in "Blech:****," with "***" being that word. If you don't know Japanese it's just pretty design, but over here in Japan, most people seem to think it's actually a part of the title. I've seen many signs in stores that went "Blech:Brain - a Warp compilation." I believed it myself, until I bought the Wipeout CD and saw the word there as well. Pretty funny. :) Reporting to you from Kobe, Japan, Satoko <Zero length text item>
