Hi! Just interviewed David of RED SNAPPER and here are a couple of things that might be of interest: The new album (for those with no promo gathering system) is gonna be a bit D&Bish with richard playing the drum part live (well mostly I guess). sounds interesting.... Also, there's gonna be an EP with unreleased album tracks under remix treatment by the squarepusher (a track called 'Crouso taking a trip' (sp?)) and by DJ FOOD. that's all folks. Snow.

Speaking of which what is everyone's opinion on 'Prince Blimey' especially in reference to 'Reeled & Skinned'? I have and love the later, but haven't gotten around to hearing the fromer, yet. The review of 'Prince Blimey' in todays Metro went down a lead ballon. Good to see Warp stuff reviewed in mainstream media, but maybe not when the review is as negative as the one below... RED SNAPPER, Prince Blimey (Recollection/Warp) ** Red Snapper's style is jazz-influenced, industrialised noise and guitar experimentation, with so much echo that it could have been recorded in a 44 gallon drum. It's a soundtrack for the creepings of a post-modern gumshoe around urban wastelands in search of stiffs. Usually, musical form follows function: the artist has an idea to convey and develops a way of expressing it. Here, it is not clear that there is a function at all, just meandering stylistic effects and vague alienation. Sometimes, as on Fatboy's Dust or Lo-beam, there's a throbbing, Massive Attack-style bassline to match the strong drumming. That's when it sounds like it might go somewhere. Then the groove collapses into locust squeaks. What's it about? There aren't many clues. The songs have titles such as Digging Doctor What What and Thomas the Fib, while the band appear on the cover as photographic shadows hovering over distorted, cartoon-faced people reminiscent of the freaked-out liberation armies/bank-robbing squads of the early '70s. As a musical landscape, Prince Blimey is denuded, apparently by design, of human context or meaning. It may be fashionable to contrive a meaningless noise, but it ain't real interesting. JODIE BROUGH Regards, John

I haven't heard _Reeled & Skinned_, but _Prince Blimey_ is an engrossing book of dark spy-movie-theme lysergic cartoons. The live acoustic bass really makes it. Lots of nice hooks and suprising transitions. Even the vocal track works. It's a bit of surprise for Warp, though. Miles

I picked up Red Snapper's "Prince Blimey" (Warp) today, and it makes a nice alternative to some of the other CD's I've picked up recently. Live instrumentation, with a jazzy feel. Jambient like a la Fax. This marks the first Warp release I can listen to all the way through since Wild Planet. Check it out. Paul Rafanello intone@warwick.net

Got hold of the latest Red Snapper album yesterday - it seems pretty good, quite a bit harder than the previous albums. They've also got a jungle MC to toast over a few of the tracks, which works pretty well, and some Shara Nelson-ish woman to sing on a few others. Actually, I'm not too keen on the stuff she's done - it's all a bit histrionic and mannered if you ask me. One of the tracks she's on, Image of you, would be great if it wasn't for the slightly over the top vocals - it sounds like she's just trying too hard. Nonetheless, I think this track could actually be pretty big (though it might blow their underground cred right out of the water if it is). Anyway, the rest of the album sounds pretty good.
