word. it's about the music folks, not testing the bounds of marginal price elasticity for bonus trainspotter macho points. lego feet at $450 (secondary market) OR red planet 9 at $5.99 (submerge)??? do the math. sam walton: buy american, support our union workers.... i should have posted a full review on the aspen cd that i got a while back long before now but will do so as soon as i head back up to seattle tomorrow, but this was some decent material. in some ways, reminiscent of boc's kicked back melodies, although at time the percussion just didn't work well for me. but worth checking out for those subtle melodies, no doubt

Ok, upfront, Aspen is a friend and is releasing a CD of my stuff, so if that nullifies this quick review, so be it. :) However, if not, read on. I was actually very pleasantly surprised by Aspen's latest, 'Are You That Retail Snob?'. On first listen I found no more than about half of the tracks lept out at me, and the crisp, very synth based sound a little too clinical. However, lo and behold, I've found it's one of those nice growing releases that people have been yarning about... With each listen I find it easier to just lose myself in the wash or tease out the finer points, rather than hung up on little points of aesthetic difference. I'd definitely say now it's a very solid release, and has something I've found lacking in some otherwise good albums: it actually hangs together as a whole, rather than sounding like a clearing of several years' back catalogue. I also think, unlike some of the releases it has been compared to, such as BoC's 'Music has the Right to Children' or Bola's 'Soup', that 'Are You That Retail Snob?' is far more rhythmically interesting. Ok, sure, it's not drill n bass - the rhythms are quite sedate and drum machiney, and possibly taken second place to the washy chords - but there are plenty of little fills and variations that keep each track alive. One thing that has surprised me in reviews I've read so far is that no one has compared it to Bionaut's 'Lush Life Electronica'. I don't actually think Aspen has heard the album in question, but if you ignore the production differences and look to the song writing, there are some real similarities. I dont think that Aspen's Progression as a Necessary Good was ever "officially" released. I know it was available as a free mp3 for some time on the long defunct Bleepblop FTP mp3 website but I checked all my Aspen cds and couldnt find it listed on any of them. So it appears to be just a promotional mp3. -->-Lance--- lance@inaudible.com p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The MP3s that were on bleepbloop are the "involve CDR compilation" that some people have asked about on here, and which Pietro really enthused over back in the day. It was always intended as a promo thing for the first Involve releases, as it's simply 3 (pre-mastered) tracks from each of the first 3 CDs, ie. 'Are You That Retail Snob?' - Aspen Jet Jaguar 'Parallel Play' - Patio 'Parallel Play' is scheduled for release in a couple of weeks. Really looking forward to it! Anyone in NZ reading, I can fill you in on the release party details off-list. As for finding those MP3s, I wouldn't be surprised if someone else on here has already contacted you offering to pass them on. :) Michael -+- Jet Jaguar MP3s http://mp3.com/jetjag/ -+- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
