BAD news? As I see it this is just fine because: 1) I will not have to spend an unpleasantly big sum of money money to obtain it. 2) The upcoming five digests are saved from the commercial vs. limited debate. Ah the first intelligent guess. (memories of GAK) Note however that both RDJ and Mark Clifford (Disjecta) have this same "CHRYSALIS MUSIC" bit on their WARP releases. As the release sounds in part like Aphex and often rather Disjecta-ish, maybe it's a collaboration between these two.? OK, if the publisher is a hint, a quick scan through some Warp discs told me that: Woodenspoon is published by Chrystalis Aphex Twin is published by Chrystalis Dysjekta is published by Chrystalis Jake Slazenger is published by Chrystalis So, either Woodenspoon is RD James, Mark Clifford, Mike Paradinas, or someone else who just happens to be published by Chrystalis... Anyways, it is a bit Autechre'ish in structure, simple but cool rhythms, deep bass, and some strange sounds that are messed around with. In my ears, it could be any one of these three (or none), but it's not the best release from any of them... Brought it to work with me -- had a chance to listen to it during my lunch break. Well, the first track "souff souff" is pretty good. A bit long and noodly in some places, but I definitely hear the RDJ/HAB influence (samples?). "Friendly aside" is just beats -- no real development. "Dig Deep Bin" is a wonderfully dark, brooding piece that reminds me a lot of Autechre with its military darkness. The final piece, "Jujasm," is playful minimalism -- whoever wrote this takes a great, full string sample and plays it at different speeds to the simple underlying beat. As to who it is who wrote this, my opinion is that it is a mix of RDJ, Autechre, Paradinas, and Vibert tracks. The styles between all songs are too different -- I don't get that coherent feel I get from listening to each artist separately. Moreover, the inscribed note "Another Porky Prime Cut" on the A side can be found also on the 10" Green Indicator record and on the SKA007 Gescom release. Whoever (perhaps plural) who did the latter records probably had some influence on this release. Alex Reynolds polygon@jhu.edu http://jhunix.hcf.jhu.edu/~polygon/
