The Ninja Tune DJ's were astonishingly good. Mixmaster Morris is a genius on the decks, and anyway is it really that important?

Have you ever been to a Big Chill b4? They've been playing jungle for ages and ages now and lots of it too.

Global Communication have never played a live set in my experience (I've seen them maybe 5 or 6 times) Has anyone ever seen them live? Mind you the quality of the DJ'ing normally makes up for it, though the volume problems did scupper them a bit at the festi)

MMM, fuckin GENIUS! Wishmountain, hilarious and funky, once again. My other favourites - they guy in the middle of the Stealth night (Mr Sho'nuff ?), Bukem once they fixed the sound, was inspirational, as always, and also Another Fine Day playing live and totally chilling us out in the sun.

I saw them in the summer of '93 here in New York City - on-the-fly Star Wars sampling and all - and they were excellent. This was before I had heard anything by them, and I became a total convert after hearing them bust out the beautiful "Ob-selon Mi-nos." I believe a certain Mr. Parillo was also there that night, if I'm not mistaken.... ;) - Matthew OnNow-->Sonny Rollins: St. Thomas

Strangely enough it was the same track that converted me to them A friend gave me a mix tape with that track starting it off - now I buy anything of theirs that I can. Have you ever noticed that if you reverse the title of that track you get the message Son I'm no lesbo! How odd! It's released way before that. The Cyberdon EP, by Mystic Institute. Might be one of those EP's they're about to re-release..? But offcourse you know that allready. he he.

The same track is also present at 'Narcosis', a compilation album on Guerilla records. It's the last track of the album and this was -my- first contact with the GC boys. byebye, Collin (celebrating his second post after one year in lurk-mode)

If anyone from Ireland is interested Virgin(?!) in Dublin just got in a few copies of _Maiden Voyage_ on Dedicated by GloComm with mixes by Brook, The Grid, Link & E6321. It's a couple of years old - has it been repressed ? If anyone from further afield really wants it, let me know and I'll try and pick it up and post it out/ trade it for something. Cheers, Simon.

Okay... but it's a bit of a stretch. Back many years ago, one of the two guys from Global Communication used to be in Aphex Twin (yes, "Richard D. James" is not the first Aphex Twin album, and there used to be two of them). So, Aphex is the connection, because there was a collaboration once (well, one official collaboration, hehehe) called "Expert Knob Twiddlers" between rd.james and m.paradinas. As far as I know though, that's the only connection. onnow: jimpster (instinct electronica) Lame Thread Prevention in Effect: Aaron Michelson --------------------------------------------------------------------- aw-teck'r (autechre) "Everything you Know is Wrong" For reviews, interviews, art & trash http://www.on-it.net/~aaron/ aaron@defiant.on-it.net

huh...this is kinda like the "bacon factor" ; ) global communication is tom middleton and mark pritchard with the later being born on the same day as richard james - hence the other "aphex twin". the two record as reload,e621,jedi knights, the horn, the rebus project, link and mystic institute...they also did a remix of "on" from SAW II as reload their projects were collectively refered to by them as "evolution" but now go by "universal language productions" and there is a comp available on warp called _the theory of evolution_ a complete discography is available from the ULP web page: http://www.ulp.co.uk/

for anyone keeping score at home global communication has a bacon factor of 3. as reload they sampled mary elizabeth mastrantonio saying "theres something down there - something not human..." from the movie the abyss for their _collection of short stories_ album. mary elizabeth mastrontonio was in the color of money with tom cruise who in turn was in a few good men with kevin bacon richard james would then have a factor of 4 as reload mixed "on" which would give mike paradinas a factor of 5 as he also remixed "on" for mr. james as well as the collaboration mentioned above

LOL! And to think, with the Internet you can get even closer ... Through CU-SeeMe, I've met both former-Supermodel Rosie Vela who knows Jack Nicholson as well as Jack's personal assistant, and since Jack was in A Few Good Men with Kevin Bacon, I guess that gives me a Bacon Factor of 3 too? Too funny ... (Of course, if I hadn't met them, I'd probably have a Bacon Factor of about 22 or something) "It's ... a smalllll world, af-ter alllll ... " ObIDM: The Ed Rush/Nico "Torque" compilation is SLAMMIN' ... Darkcore at its finest. Oh, and some really nice moments on TEEX 5, which I haven't seen too much discussion of ... (and there's an Andrea Parker track on it, for the person who was asking what else there was besides the two Mo'Wax EPs) - Greg

Check out "old_info" from Hyperreal's Aphex ftp-site. It has Ben Middleton (Tom Middleton's brother) telling that Tom was actually the second twin at first, Richard and he did Analogue Bubblebath I (hence the "featuring Schizophrenia" I think...) Well I'll quote that text anyway: His first record was a joint project with himself and my brother for Mighty Force Records (Exeter, Devon) - the Analogue Bubblebath EP (En Trance to Exit was Tom's idea!). Anyone want to explain the origin and genre of these guys? I know Global Communication only to be the makers of 76:14, an ambient album. I can't see ambient being spun at Sona, so there must be more to them than i know about! Ali Lalani "When injustice becomes law... Resistance becomes duty." Some montreal protesters

GC are House now. At least from what I've heard "The Groove". Good house though. Rusty

Jedi Knights are Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard. They make funky electro/techno music. They have also recorded under the names: - Global Communication (Ambient and house) - Chaos + Julia Set (drum and bass) - Secret ingrediants (House) - Mod Wheel (House) I'm encouraging you to get the New school science LP/CD, it's a must. -- Sebastien Dalphond, b. ing. You forgot their most brilliant and most innovative akas : RELOAD and LINK You also forgot : Pulusha (Mark Pritchard), Mystic Institute, E621 Chameleon, The Rebus Project (Tom Middleton), J Knights (their new aka, because of problems with Lucas) My suggestion is to get 'A Collection of Short Stories' (Infonet) or any of the early EPs on Evolution, or great "Auto Reload 2 EP" (Infonet). Also it's great if you cannot find any of early Evolution, which are pretty hard to find, buy yourself a copy of 'The Theory of Evolution' CD (Warp) i'm off to bed now..... sweet dreams to me rob np: sorry i didn't deciede yet, but I think it will definitely be something by Reload/Link.

No, you are correct. Get any fractal generating program for your PC and it will include the Julia set, Mandelbrot, etc.

I've put up RealAudio samples of all the Global Communication albums up at ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/cs/cspot - a representative ten-second excerpt from each track that's longer than two minutes on a given album. Hope this is helpful, I'll leave them up for a week or so. The really essential GC releases are 76 14 and Pentamerous Metamorphosis, with the edge going to 76 14. Very much an "if you haven't heard this, you aren't living yet" record. It's one of those deceptively simple works that, as you keep coming back to it, you notice more and more nuance and detail and craftsmanship. You can certainly enjoy it from your first listen, but you'll appreciate it more over time. 76 14 is not out of print, at least not in the US. It was reissued as a midprice item (!) on Dedicated/BMG late last year. Pentamerous Metamorphosis was out of print for several years but was reissued with new cover art in the first half of 1998. You want both of these, ASAP. New School Science is a much better album if you skip the weaker tracks toward the middle of it. The last three tracks are excellent. A Collection of Short Stories by Reload has stretches of greatness but parts of it haven't aged well. Theory of Evolution is a mixed bag of some older stuff that's really dated, some older stuff that's timeless, and some very good newer stuff. I agree with the poster who said Remotion has a bit too much overlap with other items that are present in a well-rounded IDM collection. I'm really being harsher than I should on this stuff. I mean, it totally smokes everything I've heard from Skam, Rephlex, etc. In the words of the master: You want ALL this. Wishmountain is not GC, it's Matt Herbert. They did co-produce one track with him, "The Cough," which is on some old Evolution 12" and was reissued this year on the 'Wishmountain Is Dead' CD. It's an excellent track and an excellent disc overall but as a few people have pointed out, the WM sound isn't to everyone's taste. Check out his tracks on Theory of Evolution; if you like those, get the Wishmountain disc. C. -- Chris.Hilker (cspot@hyperreal.org)

Speaking of Global Communications, Mark Pritchard has released two 12" under the name USE OF WEAPONS on Danny Breaks's Droppin Science label. The most recent single Stan's Plan is really good!!! In fact, alot of Squarepusher fans might like this also, because it sort of sounds like Tom Jenkinson when he is playing bass. Other dnb alias by them are Chaos & Julia Set [Universal Language] and Chameleon [Good Looking Records]. I just mentioned these because I'm sure everyone is familiar with Jedi Knights, Link, and Reload. But some people may have missed these. Oh and Mark Pritchard is suppose to be collaborating with Danny Breaks and release a project called Vertigo [Droppin Science].
