I went to my local disk shop in between loads of Laundry the other evening, and low and behold, they had the new SquarePusher LP. After reading all the hype on this List, I had to hear it. "SquarePusher Theme" and "Theme from Ernest Borgnine" were both excellent. But some of the other tunes( don't remember names) just left me there, with an odd look on my face. SquarePusher is definitely different. I found similarities to Aphex Twin(another artist who has never really done it for me), in experimental style. Despite the two solid tracks, this disk did not leap out, and say spend your $20 on me, like my previous purchase... "LTJ Bukem presents The Rebirth". Another continous mix of low-key drum 'n base tracks. The only problem I have with this disk is that the whole CD is one track, and that one of the songs is featured on the Logical Progression compilation. He's definitely my favorite artist of the moment. But it amazes me that LTJ does not get more "airtime" on this list. Both "Rebirth" and "Logical Compression" are excellent albumns. Another recent pickup of mine in the Drum 'n Bass genre, is Flynn + Flora "Native Drums". Trippy Drum 'n Bass. It's harder then the other's in the Intelligent Jungle genre, such as T Power, SubTropic, or LTJ. But it features some excellent tracks such as "revolution", "you are sleeping", "love", and "bass speaker". This one is getting heavy rotation. Cripes, isn't the market saturated already? Does he do one of these every week? Do we really need another round of "After Hours" and "Circles" and all those other tracks he plays on every mixed disc? Is he ever going to buy new copies of all those records so he can finally put out a mixed CD that doesn't sound horrible? C. -- cspot@hyperreal.com (Chris.Hilker)
