like other New York pioneers such as Mantronix, Afrika Bambaataa's early work was seminal, while his work in the 90s has left much to be desired. Seek out his 12"s on the Tommy Boy label and you'll have his best stuff: "Planet Rock", "Renegades Of Funk", "Looking For The Perfect Beat (Assault On Precinct 13") etc. The 808 cowbell-lead rhythm of his Planet Rock formed the backbone of much of the freestyle music that it inspired, and is still often heard in today's (i hate this term) "nu electro". Andrea Parker recently used the accapella "Renegades Chant" on her "mix" cd for Studio k7, and it was this same acc. that gave MARRS' "Pump Up The Volume" its bite back in 1987. Bam's "beat dis" cry (from his "Looking...") gave Tim "Bomb The Bass" Simenon the title (and thrust/ reason) for his sample hit of '87. Arthur Baker and John Robie also worked with Bambaataa, and their influence/work is also important (again, the early stuff; avoid things like the later Arthur Baker and the Backbeat Disciples, etc). Seek out too Man Parrish (though you'll be more into his electro than his HI-NRG), Newcleus, and the Jonzun Crew (you can "blame" Michael Jonzun for New Kids On The Block, no word of a lie) Hope this helps. Hmmm, I agree as far as Bambaataa's concerned but I'd say Mantronix has made a great comeback. The early-'90s albums were *really* commercial and tired-sounding, but Mantronik's recent solo album is excellent. I wasn't expecting much, especially considering he remade "King of the Beats" for a "Prodigy"-style audience, but it turned out very well -- halfway between the old classic Mantronix sound and what's happening now in hip-hop as well as electronic(a). If anyone in the commercial rap world gave Mantronik a chance at producing Jay-Z or DMX, he'd blow up. .John. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

John. I *really* wanted to like his album on Oxygen Music Works, *really*, but it just didn't do anything for me. We'll have to "agree to disagree" on that point, I guess. But, yes, he still has much to offer and it would be great to see him take the Timbalands, Un-Riveras, et al on. :) Andrew Duke John Bush wrote:
