Is Temple of the Transparent Balls worth the $21 I saw it for the other day? I really *love* spanners, so I'm hoping this one won't disappoint (and it's an earlier album, yes?). BTW, is the Black Dog now Plaid? What happened to them? How about Global Communication: Remotion. This is a disc of remixes, no? And Pentamorous Metamorphosis is no longer available? Bleh. Thanks. I just picked up Em:t Explorer, the new(ish) comp from T:me/Instinct. It's quite good! -jon

Temple of Transparent Balls is not nearly as good as Spanners. However, don't let this get you down, as Transparent Balls still features some inspirational intelligent music. Plaid is 2/3 of Black Dog, it started as a side project, but when Black Dog fell apart (in part because of the split Plaid was responsible for) Plaid went on to do their own thing. Post-split Black Dog is simply the remaining guy, I think it's Ken Downey, but I'm just thinking off the top of my head. Both bands are signed to Warp...albums expected shortly.

To answer your questions: Mmm...Yes. Yes. No. Sorry.

In my opinion _Temple of Transparent Balls_ is the best Black Dog album. It has the greatest blend of catchy, quirky melodies and nice beats out of all the Black Dog albums. _Spanners_ tends to be a litle darker and a touch more experimental then _Temple .._. $21 seems a fair price (it was $33 in a local record shop here - of course I refused to pay that and got it elsewhere for cheaper). The album came out in 1993, at least that is what is listed on the CD. Here is a the latest news I have seen regarding the Black Dog: --- From tbd@feedback.comSat Mar 16 20:49:40 1996 Date: Sat, 16 Mar 96 23:23:40 GMT From: the black dog <tbd@feedback.com> Newsgroups: alt.music.techno Subject: ThE BlAcK DoG LiVEs! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The Black Dog's ===================== N E W S - L E T T E R Dear people of the net, thanks for keeping faith in this year, despite all the 'anti-publicity'. It's definately not 'all over' here in London. I've been busy producing new stuff, which you will hopefully all get to hear soon. The recruiting drive is going well, and hopefully the dog will be out on the road later on in the summer. With live drum and bass. Here's a taster.. --------------------------------------------------------- Music for Adverts (and Short films) =================================== The new album by 'The Black Dog' is finished! Master DAT will be delivered to warp records on the 25th of march. They reckon it will be three months after that, before they can release it. We feel that's too long. "Hurry up and release it!!!!!!!" faxes would be welcomed. Warp Records fax : +44 (0)114 281 2002 --------------------------------------------------------- The Babylon Project =================== A project calling for peace in the middle east. To unite and solve our problems in friendship, before the end of the world. Featuring the delectable vocals of Ofra Haza. The Belly Mix - Arabic mix, done by the Black Dog, which will hopefully be given away free on the net. Advice on compression techniques is welcome! We have mixes from a number (8) of friends/collaborators, and have poured loads of our creative energies into this project. It will blow many techno pretenders, out of the water. We are not boasting. 1996 is the year of the dog! More info: tbd@feedback.com --------------------------------------------------------- Graphics/Realities ================== Ken has had to suspend work on the BDP video, and most of the 3d imaging since the split, and concentrate on his music. Research on techniques of world building is still going on, though we haven't got the budget to do anything 'serious' with it yet. Everyone is learning. The Black Dog mu system is taking shape, and we will be calling for LPC wizards to come and help us out soon. The high cost of a leased line, precludes us getting connected to the net from the start, so we're looking at getting it connected with dialup landlines at first. As stated in 1989, the majority of any income from record sales, will be ploughed into research for FREE networking technologies. A friendly haven in a corporate cyberspace. So many artists, sell out, and get a mortgage, or get a "personal wealth" habit, that they expect you 'the fan' to pay for. Nothing like that goes on here. --------------------------------------------------------- The "Free Tibet" album ====================== As you have probably noticed, some artists have chosen to look at china as a new market, and even play gigs there. The Black Dog feels this is deplorable. China has one of the most appalling records for human rights on the planet, and is subsequently being boycotted by Black Dog Productions. We know not to tar a nation with it's government's brush, but feel that tibet is ignored, because it lacks the wealthy oil resources of kuwait. To draw attention to the plight of tibetans, the Black Dog is going to record a 'Free Tibet' album, and rally ethical ravers. --------------------------------------------------------- There is more, much more, but that's enough for now..
