I've got a reccommendation, but as it isn't strictly idm or ambient, I want to justify it just the slightest bit. One of the stepping stones for my departure from crap music (hehe well, let's just call it 'traditional') was the brilliant noise of shoegazing bands out of england in the late 80s. In particular, I'm thinking of My Bloody Valentine. From there, I began to redefine what I thought music was, until a point now at which I love electronic ambience in all its beastly forms. So, my bloody valentine. I know there are tons of fans out there, many perhaps on this list, who are STILL waiting for kevin to release a new album. Of course, many of us have moved on to different musical appreciation, but as I have no doubt I'd be eager to hear a new MBV album, I imagine there are others. Well, NO new MBV. But, I've found something very close. Flying Saucer Attack. I don't know where they're from, England perhaps? My cd's were imported from Canada, but I don't think they're actually canadian. ANYWAY, let's get on with it. This stuff is awesome. Brilliant walls of sound eerily reminiscient of MBV. In fact, the first time I heard one (on the radio, no less), I thought it was MBV. They do have their own identity, however. As MBV is more traditional in time and beat, Flying Saucer Attack are a more mellow-paced band. You can hear the progression of sound under the distortion clearly enough to make the distinction. Strictly as sound, which I'm sure my parents would say is warped shit deserving of a trip to the trash, the music is similiar to MBV. As music, it's much more subdued, more ambient even. The tension of MBV is often replaced by the relaxed atmosphere of these two (or three?). I have the albums "Further" and "Chorus", both of which I recommend to anyone who loved My Bloody Valentine, but has since moved on to ambient/listening music. I'm not connected with the band (as my obvious lack of information ABOUT the band shows), I just love this stuff. If you think this message is out of line for the list, I'm sorry, but I had to tell someone who might understand. ---brian -- ****************************************************************** All women are fat, don't argue with them about it. Loveless was what? 5 years in the making. I heard a rumour recently that they have a new e.p. coming out this year, and an album early next year. bs> Well, NO new My Bloody Valentine. There is (finally!) something new to be expected somewhere begin '96. I heard in Februari, but i'm not sure. It's a 3-track EP. They're not IDM at all, but nobody knows what the next release might be. And "Loveless" is one of my all times favorites... bs> But, I've found something very close. Flying Saucer Attack. bs> I don't know where they're from, England perhaps? Yes, they're from england. 2 persons. The female is also involved in the band 'Movietone'. I don't think they're very close to MBV, but there are things you can compare. bs> I have the albums "Further" and "Chorus", both of which I recommend I see 'Further' as a dissapointment, i rather recommend their earlier stuff. There is a s/t album, and a collection of singles (LP) called 'Distance'. bs> If you think this message is out of line for the list, I'm sorry, bs> but I had to tell someone who might understand. Oh well. Everybody who love music like AFX, mu-ziq, etc, should listen to My Bloody Valentine's Loveless at least 50 times.. it's so fucking brilliant.

The Flying Saucer Attack records have been released domestically in the US by DRAG CITY and by VHF there have also been many 7" releases by them as well. In fact they are probably the most prolific of bands. In their 2 year(approx) existance they have put out 4 albums a singles collection and contributed many a track to compilation records etc. They are from England(Bristol I believe). E:mail me personally for a full report, I don't have access to my reading material on the subject. They have a track on DISTANCE the singles collection that is definitely IDM, the remix for 'Ocean' If you like FSA check out the following bands that skirt the IDM / Indie rock boundaries Jessamine The DEAD C Bardo Pond Bowery Electric Bugskull Labradford JAHKNEE could fill you in on somemore you should be paying domestic prices for most of this stuff as it is out on US Labels( if that's where you are??) ---------- From: idm-owner To: idm Cc: ambient Subject: (idm) Flying Saucer Attack Date: Tue, Jan 16, 1996 3:05PM I've got a reccommendation, but as it isn't strictly idm or ambient, I want to justify it just the slightest bit. Both EP's are really --great stuff. i don't have the 5ep because i didn't buy it. i listened to it in the store and compared to techno artists (by this i mean artists who only do that crunchy yummy idm stuff) i thought it was severely lacking. are the 5ep tracks the four that are tacked onto the end of the u.s. souvlaki? if so i find them merely ok, but not really up to par with more mindblowing idm. slowdive was always much better at the 'eyes-half-closed mumbling stoned sensual guitar wash' than at anything other type of music imo (souvlaki is a masterpiece, mojave 3 is nice and mellow but a few of the songs on that album need work.) that's not to say that pygmalion doesn't have its merits; on the contrary, i like this lp a whole lot because it has this thick mood to it and the occasionally overused musical ideas cum songs on that album somehow still blend into an entrancing and yes ambient whole. it's perfect rain music; i haven't listened to it for a few months because it hasn't really rained here in a few months. :( maybe after i read more film class homework tonight i'll have to put it on. i'm a adoring fan of reload/global comm/link but alas, i never could find the in mind remixes *sniff* yours in bleary-eyed just woke up-ness and barely-relevance, .j. --- joroses@mail.utexas.edu http://ccwf.cc.utexas.edu/~joanna andover '94 - Syndicated columnist Dave Barry says that "those weird string of letters that have started showing up everywhere in newspaper stories, advertisements, TV shows, etc., the ones that look like http//www/clamsucker.doo.wah" are "code instructions to Dan Rather from his home planet."
