I've recently picked up a few treasures I'd like to mention: - Aural Expansions "Remixed Sheep" (SSR). This CD contains six remixes from two previously released 12"s plus three previously unreleased remixes by Speedjack and Jouni Alkio (Mr. Aural Expansion himself). If your're not familiar with the 12"s then the remixers on this CD will sound like a who's who of electronic music. Remixers include Wagon Christ, Mixmaster Morris (Irresistable Force), Mu-Ziq, Speedjack (+ of LFO), and G-Man (+ of LFO). A Great CD. - Funki Porcini "Hed Phone Sex" 2xCD (Shadow). This domestic double CD is a Ninja Tune treat. Featuring 15 tracks on CD 1 and 8 tracks on CD 2 (including the Digidub and Plaid remixes of King Ashabanapal). This CD is the combination the import version of "Hed Phone Sex" plus the "Ashabanapal's Big Pink Inflateable" ep. Regardless, this release features classic trip hop/jazz/funk/ jungle/dub/idm that the Ninja Tune label is renown for. Also Kudos to Shadow for releasing this domestically and giving us a second disc to boot! BTW: the new DJ Food CD "Recipe for Disaster" is also available on Shadow with three new tracks. - Kid Spatula "Spatula Freak" (Reflective). My vote for album of the year. This is by far the best Mike Pardinas release (although I haven't heard Bluff Limbo - YET!). Cheesy melodies and percussive madness. - Sandoz "Every Man Got Dreaming" (Intone/Touch). More masterful ethno techno from Richard Kirk, one of the creators of the genre. This release has a faster tempo than his two previous lps with a excellent ambient ethno jungle as the first track. The best of the three Sandoz full-length releases. - Disjecta "Looking for Snags" ep (Warp). A very Aphexy/Autechrey sound from Seefeel's Mark Clifford. Sounds most like Seefeel's "Fracture/Tied" ep. Excellent. Go out and get these releases. You'll enjoy them all. I do. -->-Lance--- mclance@en.com BTW: Does anybody know if the new Spacetime Continuum "Kairo" ep will be released on CD?

released on CD? Yes, it will be on the January 30 full length release called "Emit Ecaps". More news on this album in a bit. Brian

If you're looking for the 'Mealtime' CD in the Los Angeles area, Rhino on Westwood had two copies as of this afternoon. They also have the As One CD on Mo'Wax and the new Global Communication single, which I haven't seen at Arons etc. Speaking of which, are there any decent shops I should know about in LA? I've tried all the ones listed in the Rotator Locator at Hyperreal except the ones in Costa Mesa, and my experience on the phone with those two ("4 Hero? Is that house?") doesn't make me anxious to schlep down there. Voting in the '97 poll is going well, with about 60 ballots received so far. the ballot repost follows for anyone who missed it the first time. Am I the only one who thinks that 'Endlessnessism' or whatever it's called on Dot is already practically a shoo-in for Comp of the Year '98? Off-topic: if anyone happened to record the Leon Parker performance from the Knitting Factory, broadcast this past weekend on Branford Marsalis's NPR jazz program, email me privately, please! I find the list reponse to the Arcon 2 album interesting - people criticized Photek's album for having three previously released tracks, but nobody's mentioned that Leon has at least five or six single tracks on his album. As for the music itself, I like a lot of it, but I liked a lot of it better the first time, when it was called 'The Self Evident Truth of an Intuitive Mind' - like the less jazzy parts of Amon Tobin's 'Bricolage,' Leon Mar gets a lot of mileage out of sounds that T Power left behind two years ago. Finally, I haven't seen much in the way of comments or descriptions of the Horn's 'Hornography' album on ULP. What should I expect if I order it? I disagree with the T-Power comparison - the Arcon 2 full-length is different in that the beats are tougher and more focused. T-Power material sounds like a lot of noodling around IMO. Besides the Arcon 2 tracks have much more of a techstep elan, as opposed to the "flowery" ambient stuff on TSETOAIM. Personally I think the Arcon 2 LP is mediocre because a lot of it sounds the same (breaks, general track progression) - I like the sound of it but more variety is needed. I'd have to agree with track duplication though. There are probably a fair number of people that haven't picked up the original Arcon 2 singles (in comparison with Photek 12s), so fewer people are bitching because this is the first time they've heard them. I'm really starting to think that d&b should stick within the 12" format - and just maybe 4-6 track EPs. They're fresher and more focused this way. GD

I think you have a point here. An alternative is not to stick so closely to the expected d'n'b parameters and to wander freely into other musical territory -- a range larger than from "jazz-inflected d'n'b" to "hard techstep". Embrace everything. Or does variety only spoil the appeal? (I got some sense of that in reactions to Photek's album.) --Mark PS Several complete tracks for download, much variety: __ <http://www.xnet.com/~mkolmar/BurningRome> < MPEG & RA audio clips > Forthcoming CD SENSELESS on Mindfield Records MINDCD03 Cathartium 14 m u s i c : w e b : s o u n d d e s i g n : h t m l : c g i : e t c "I'm a liberal guy too cool for the macho ache with a secret tooth for the cherry on the cake" -- Prefab Sprout, "Cruel"
