i picked up the autechre 12' for "anvil vapre" a while ago. its excellent of course and due to its age i won't go on. however as i was listening to it rather loudly the other day it occurred to me that such distortion at really high levels may actually be dangerous for loud speakers. For instance when crver came out with the sonic hologram generator, which produced a spatial effect using pulse high frequency distortion, it was deemed distructive. anyone with any opinions about the safety of mu-ziq, aphex, autechre etc songs which use siuch extreme sounds? -- Mark Bowen mb@gettins.bche.uic.edu

Well, not really idm, but Jesus Jones had a warning on their second album "doubt" that playing at loud volumes could damage your audio equipment. I'm not sure whether it was a joke or not. Rob.

the danger is in playing them on an amp that doesn't have a high enough power rating, especially if you crank the music. you will wind up clipping the signal which can hurt the amp and the speakers. speakers are unlikely to blow if they are fed a good clean non-clipping signal (and of course they are properly rated for your setup) -- Name: Jon Email: jsd@cyborganic.com Web: http://www.cyborganic.com/bass-kittens/

yeah. he he heehehehehhh. It blew the sound rig at Decadog. That rig deserved it. LFO _LFO_ has blown 2 sets of my speakers in the past but I like to explore these boundaries. Besides, they were under warranty. 'twas not clipping, it was end-stop hitting. g3 g The WARP Web Site 3 0 3 http://www.inta.net/~g303/warp/

I tried to get the kings o' the bass bin to pop an old set of speakers i was about to replace, til i discovered that an old severed heads track (4WD) had already done the job neatly. hmmm... no wonder they sounded so different with the new amp... i don't recall the warp release of frequencies coming with the warning label. was this just another of tommy boy's BrightIdeas<tm>? i remember after the lfo remix came out, the rumor/myth round motown was that mentok was recorded though some of lfo's blown gear. jmar! hoping santa brings him an early promo of advance... yeah right. | J M R T N K O | fonstrosities and other toys by ILLGBLITY ENGNRING. | | D S G N E T C | JOHN-A MARTINKO, w. desk chief martinko@netcom.com |

I think they got the idea from Baby Ford -Oochy Koochy 12" 1988 -Rythym King records cause that had the warning on it back before LFO. Derek
