This is several months after the first talk of this 12", but I've only just stumbled over a copy at a reasonable price, and thought I'd add a belated recommendation. This is the first release on Vertical Form, a label which, to the best of my knowledge, is run by at least one of the people from the Atlas Records store in London (possible John, ex-Fat Cat store). It's safely in the minimal, BC-related camp. If that's not your bag don't bother hit ye ol' delete now. The first track, 'Klein' is an uptempo four-to-the-floor number, reminding me quite a lot of the stuff that was coming out on Thule a couple of years back (I take it people into the sound remember the 'Fishcake' comp). Bright, synthy chords, very clear sounding and lots of popping and ticking on the percussion front. A2, 'Grit' reminds me of what I've heard of Kit Clayton (only the stuff on ~scape, unfortunately...) - resonant punchy chords echoing off and an syncopated but ultimately repetitive rhythm replete with deep bass sine tones. "Yummo", says I. Really cool, purposeful use of reverb on the percussion on this track, and a great mood. Probably the name to drop for 'Bit', the opener on the B side, is SND. I still wouldn't mistake this for one of their tracks, but it's in similar territory. Really slow, pocky-pock percussion sounds, but with more of those bright synth chords echoing away contrary to the beat, loading on the dub connections. The last track, 'Sci Fi', is another four-to-the-floor, and a fast one. To go with the analogies one more time, it most reminds me of the Vladislav Delay 12" on Max Ernst, although (of course) the CR and Thule similarities are readily evident. One thing is he keeps it un-dubby, just maintaining the same kind of groove as the aforementioned outfits. Nice stabbing syncopated chords slice in and out and, well, everything's fine. My overall impression is that it would be an absolutely killer record to have as a DJ... structurally everything just cruises along as with all of this kind of music, but still the feel on every track is so nice I'm not concerned in the slightest. It is good to see some post-reverberation from this release following my earlier recommendation about Rapaciolli. Upon retrospect this EP commands more an intelligent dub techno approach than other contemporaries of this sound eg Kit Clayton, Pole etc. Personally Rapaciolli just has that extra-added touch of *class* with this 'sound' than these other artists, not without any disrespect to them because I think they are excellent too. Simply extra-ordinary, and the new Vertical Forms 02 Rapaciolli w/ Agent Cooper stands out to form too. Thanks for bringing this up again. Electronic Dub appreciators rejoice! "commands more an intelligent dub techno approach"? Really? I think it's a very good release but NOT amazing by any means or "more intelligent". I find it to better than some of the Chain Reaction releases...lately. Actually the response I got from some people when I played it on the radio, was... "yeah it's good but I have too much stuff that sounds just like it". Various Artists - 8, 8.5, 9 (Original) Fat Cat is alot more interesting!! I had same kind of initial reaction, but that EP grew on me. So much that it got into my top ten of 1999. PS. speaking of 1999, how does the QBA (Brinkmann) 12" sounds like? Relatively speaking, it may take different time-span progressions for releases to evolve from just being 'good' to 'great'. For me this release was instantaneous in my reaction. And for jusii, obviously a slightly different timespan. It may also occur for you sometime also. Well, as to your friends that play it on radio, spot the *keywords* - they contend that they have too much stuff that *sounds just like it* - and not vice versa! And remember that intelligence is a subjective concept. The only other artists/ releases that I can say pars on level with this release (within the minimal/ dub realm) at the moment is Monolake and the Clicks/Cuts compilation. 8, 8.5, 9 remixes also comes pretty close, I may say. Time will tell... I never mentioned anything about time-spans into levels of...whatever. I just thought your use of "intelligent" was funny. What was it now....oh yeah.."more intelligent dub techno". The word intelligent gets tossed around a little too much on this list. Is that one of the few words people have in their vocabulary to describe music? Ex..Oh that's intelligent grindcore or that's lesser intelligent dub.....blah blah. Sorry for the cynicism, it's just funny to me.For me this release was instantaneous in my reaction. And the thing you can note is that they liked it but obviously it didn't stand out enough to warrant buying more stuff like that. Of course, with this whole timespan continuum thing who knows?
