I used to feel the same way. I used to listen to a lot of very
negative music because I felt it was more honest and sincere. I've
changed a lot since then and so have my musical tastes. With hindsight,
it's clear to me that I found that music so affecting because it mirrored
what was going on in my head. My conclusion is that musical tastes are
extremely subjective (surprise) and that people are drawn to music that
expresses emotions and moods familiar to them. These days I don't see
negative or positive music as inherently more "serious" or sincere or
significant.
I'm not surprised at all that people found the early rave
idealism to be a bit superficial and incomplete; most people's experience
of life (so I gather) is far too mixed for such a one-sided rosy view.
What does surprise me is how far and how fast the pendulum seems to have
swung in the other direction. It's curious.
