Well, you know somethin', I noticed in a book about breakdancing that
these 40 street-rappin'-electro-dancin' kids in Chicago in '84 said that
their fave breakin' track was "Owner of a Lonely Heart" - some 12" mix.
Probably more of a nod to Trevor Horn than anybody, but, Herbie Hancock
sampled the hell out of that and other Yes songs from that LP for his
"Metal Beat" 12". That LP is rich with processed sound for making vocal
pads, blasts and weird blips with the resonant filter on yer sampler. I
heard a Luke Skyywalker vinyl piece (Florida style BASS circa '87) that very
cleverly scratched some "Leave It" remix into the rap...
On a similar thread, remember how St. Etienne sampled Rush from '79.
Damn funny that was. I find loops of bombastic art rock mix well with
samples of Curtis Mayfield thru-distortion-pedal...
I wouldn't be suprised at all to catch a sample of old King Crimson in
FSOL or the Orb someday soon.
