surely someone on this list went to the san fran cruise with u-ziq? could someone post a review? i'd love to hear about how it was - unless he handed out free copies of bluff limbo to everyone who went, in which case, i'd rather not hear anything about it ;) saw two new comps with a black dog song on each - there's the "trace through time" or something with "bumfluff" by bdp, and then there's "further self evident truths" from rising high that has "pillars and mirrors". the latter is wonderful, btw - with a beautiful melody that puts most of "spanners" to shame. i'm thinking of getting the cd just for that song. there are other attractions on the comp, and actually it's a bit like a wagon christ album, with two tunes off "throbbing pouch" and a few remixes. ...james

Yep somebody on this list did go. It was very interesting. It started off on a very good foot. The boat was biger than the last one and the waters were more quiet (there was a storm during the Mixmaster Morris Ambient Jungle cruise). Jona spun on the middle deck and was playing great music with danceable beats. His mixes were poor but I suppose it's pretty hard to mix while swaying... (he should have been sitting like Mixmaster Morris did) At a really good peak of energy the amp blew. This obviously caused confusion with the crew and crowd. (the smell of fried electronics is enough to make anyone on a boat nervous) During this break from the music I had a chance to meet Paradinas. He is a very friendly fellow. The first thing I asked him was about Bluff Limbo. Here's the scoop... Only 1000 copies were pressed. 250 copies were given out to friends and the rest went to promote the album. It has never been officially released. I asked him what the problem was since it's been over a year since the announced release date. He voiced his complaints with Rephlex' business practice and said that he's since left the label. (he also mentioned some personal problems with the owner of the label...) This promped me to ask him about his new supposed record deal. He said that yes he has signed Mu-ziq to a 7 record deal with Virgin. (SEVEN!!!) He's already completed two of them. He also told me about a double vinyl album under Luke Slazinger coming out on Clear. If I remember correctly he said that it'll be the second release after the Plaid single. He also mentioned a collaboration album with Richard James. So everyone can expect four full length albums and several singles in the near future because these were already finished according to him... Back to the cruise and the show. The real problem after the amp blew was figuring out how to continue the show. No amp means no show... Well they ended up snagging the amp from the top level's sound system but it wasn't as powerful as the one blown... After a half-hour set of jungle (I didn't bother to find out who was playing because the smell of burnt electronics was getting to me) Paradinas went on. HOLY SHIT!!! That boy is truly disturbed. I did get a chance to ask him from what material his set would consist of. He said he'd do some Tango 'n Vectif stuff but mostly newer tracks from both the Mu-ziq releases AND the Slazinger LP on Clear. Crazier, funkier and more distorted techno to be expected from the forthcoming albums. I was so impressed with the music that he could create with the few digital synths he used. He told me that the gear consisted of the same stuff in his studio. He just brought the disks and rented out the stuff. I did notice some Boss distortion pedals that he heavily relied on as well. In comparison to Tango 'n Vectif the other tracks were much more detailed and complex. I really think he's developed further along. I can't wait for the new releases. The sound quality of the system was poor but in retrospect I think the whole thing went pretty well. I heard that only 80 presale tickets were sold but there was a decent crowd of around 150, so I hope the party was a success so that San Francisco can enjoy more similar events. On a final note, from the exitement in Paradinas' voice when talking about the Slazinger LP on Clear, I have a feeling that this is his favorite upcoming album. Keep your eyes and ears open because if you liked Tango 'n Vectif, you surely wont be dissapointed in the new material. Oh yeah, one more thing. Paradinas told me that he was looking into suing Rephlex for the rights and master copy of Bluff Limbo for breach of contract. (since they never released it) If this happens, expect to see Bluff Limbo on Virgin. If it doesn't then we may never see it unless Rephlex gets their act together and presess it. Mike seemed rather doubtful if Rephlex will ever press considering the tension between him and the label... Let's all pray it does get released one way or another becasue even Mike said it was some of his best material. It occurred to me that Bluff Limbo is quite an ironic name for it. -robert ______________________________________________*AudioElectronic*_____ "UFO: Starting with the MG Frequency knob at 0, sonic explorers \ as you turn up the knob, \ the UFO will sound like it is taking off." -> MS-20 manual ____\

I've got a story to tell, but I'm writing it up. He also told me the true scoop behind Bluff Limbo.

Actually there was a decent sized group of us there. I ran into: Greg Earle, Tamara Palmer, Mike Battaglia, John Shipley, Pete Ashdown, I'm sure there were others. It was a pretty good show but not quite what I was expecting. After being so excited about a show I guess I'm bound to be at least a little dissapointed. Mr. Paradinas played for I guess about an hour, a decent mix of tracks of Tango 'n Vectif and Bluff Limbo athough some of my favorites were missing. They were having some technical problems intermittently and the sound could have been a bit better (and louder). I don't know, there's something really wierd about watching a bunch of people crowded around a guy twiddling knobs and clicking his mouse while some of the most insane sounds ever are coming out of the speakers. It's even wierder when this is taking place inside a cruise ship that's drifting next to alcatrazz island. After his set Mike went around the boat handing out copies of Bluff Limbo (vinyl or cd) to everyone .... uhh, just kiding. Before and after u-ziq Jonah Sharp was Dj'ing, his mixing skills aren't the greatest but he played a nice IDM set, lots of tracks that I didn't recognize but I'm pretty sure he played something off the new Gescom ep in there somewhere. The boat pulled in about a half an hour before the advertised 2am arival leaving some people feeling a little bit shortchanged, especially since it left late. All in all it was a pretty interesting experience, kind of a bummer that there weren't anymore dates...Anyone go to the after party? Andy
