tp disclaimer... i did not write this. this review is culled from issue number seven of the terra posse publication _syndrome_. my good friend hans veneman is on a mission to code the contents in html (hence the cc) and i'm positive there was an idmer asking about cosmic/club stuff. enjoy. ------------ S.B. PROJECT THE MESSAGE E.P. club tracks cosmic records There are two types of minimilism. Processed and raw. Processed is pasteurized simplicity. Basic to a degree in sound, this audio-type is high on clarity. More tint than flint. Raw, on the other hand succeeds because behind the 'simple' is honesty: a worked groove that is done by an artist who trances out to the sound, instead of pressing for the trend. 'The Message E.P.' is raw like a butcher's floor. Stuffed double-pack, it entrails deep rolls of the minimal minds. With hypnotic tracks labeled up from number 13 to 18, each one carries a light pack of essential hard utensils. With the 909 meat, 808 dices, and peppered synths, the S.B. Project carries the true Chicago tip, sharpening it with respect. Never dull. Shit sneakz thru on each track. It's not just a thump, a dump, and a high hat. TRACK 15 includes a heavy-duty squelch, a grin synth, the click-clack tops, the electra congo, and to whip off the peak, a 'work that pussy'. In other words, the minimal is intact, but still engaging, harboring between under-production and over-production. Homespun homely in the middle. Then there are cuts like X-TRA EDIT #1, #2, where the S.B. Project upgrades to a funky spank, living up the rustic freestyle, while ransaking the mix with rewinds and quick shut-offs. X-TRA EDIT #2 is the highpoint. It begins with tribal kick, like Bruce Lee on Gilligan's Island. Time for the rewind, extra- on the loud, before the tribal freestyle overwhelms. When dancing to this track, one floored philosopher might ask: 'How much shake can the booty take?' Jus' watch where you swing it....... The 'Message E.P.' succeeds in a different way than other minimal stompers. Instead of tracks which flex the calves, these cuts trance; not like a stoopid raver jumpin' to a stoopid euro-trashnce, disabled groove, but more like a closed eye ride, shaking muscle with the plywood ponder. On TRACK #18, S.B Project uses the 'I gotta big dick' sample to spice the hazed hypno. Never before has such a sample been used to light the abstract. Considering hygiene, this E.P. is as clean as a born-again comedian, played out to Thoreauxish proportions, bootlickin nothing but the basics.
