Hey! I remember Fluid mentioned the little article on ambient music/house in the November issue of Details, and i just happened to read it over at my girlfriends. I saw mention of Seefeel and the two eps that they have released. I also saw them listed in the EAR/Rational catalog. anyone have any opinions on these? they sound cool. oh yeah, does anyone know if it is still possible to get neroli by brian eno? i've been told it is similar to thursday afternoon (which is 61 minutes of pure bliss) is it out of print? To anyone interested in an opinion of Seefeel: This band is incredible! Their sound should appeal to anyone interested in the dubby side of house and even the guitar feel of bands such as My Bloody Valentine and Stereolab. The mere fact that they were included in a recent details article which also mentioned Richard James, Moby, FSoL, PWoG, and many other IDM artists should warrant them a listen. From what I can gather they have only released two EP's on vinyl (which From: ??? Date: ??? Subject: ??? Status: Their sound ranges from bass-heavy, flanged guitar to bass-heavy ambient dub. One note of distinction for the band comes in the fact that the Aphex Twin mixes of 'Time To Find Me' vary little from the original. The band say that Richard liked the tracks in their original form, so he didn't do a hatchet job as he did with Jesus Jones and Curve. They have an album due out this month on Too Pure. I hardly hear any guitars at all on this EP. They could have used them a little bit more, I think, to set them apart from the rest of the fluffy posse. And the last track is intensely boring. But I like the first 3 tracks. - chris@minsk.docs.uu.se <http://www.update.uu.se/~chris/>

Just got back from an interview with Seefeel. Those waiting for a new album will have to wait until October. There will be a new EP out on Warp in June/July called "Rupt". And around the same time, a single on Rephlex (Ben?). They said that the new album will be "harder, more dub and more hip hop (!)". They thought "Quique" was "a really tame album". One of their new songs, "Vix", is quite fast, 140+ bpm. A lot more was said, but I'll save that for the article. - chris@minsk.docs.uu.se <http://www.update.uu.se/~chris/>

They thought "Quique" was "a really tame album". I hope that their new stuff is more intricate than the loopy wanks of old. I found that, for the most part, their music tended to be very interesting, but it never evolved very well. So in the end I found my self scanning through to find "the next phrase"... Unfortunatly that is worse than death for this type of music. I feel this music should draw you in and take you on a voyage. Although the tamber of Seefeel was beautiful, it still bored me. It takes a lot to bore me. Even minimalist stuff intrigues me. e.g. Eno, Steve H, Holger Czukay.. Seefeels' creations suggest they are going to do more, evolve to another level, but never do. Nuf ranting.. Jeff Taylor

i came across an interview done by a couple of Vancouver djs that Seefeel had left Too Pure records and were about to sign a deal with Warp. From:owner-idm@hyperreal.com Subject: REVIEW: Seefeel "Fracture Tied" Seefeel -- Fractured Tied Warp WAP53CD Fracture: 5:55 Tied: 6:35 Way back when (say, 1993) the story on Seefeel was that Too Pure signed them, but refused to release recordings by them until they came up with something less derivative of My Bloody Valentine. This they did, to good effect. Apocryphal or not, this story is illuminating in the current state of affairs. Fracture/Tied is, to my ears very derivative of Aphex Twin. 'Fracture' features a distorted drum track, ala 'Quoth' backed by echoey, slow guitar or synth lines. The female vocals, when they kick in, sound like the echoed samples on SAW II. In fact, I'd guess that you could reconstruct this track with a copy of SAW II and Surfing on Sine Waves. Not that it's a bad track. I actually quite like it. I'm just concerned that a band that a year ago was turning out music that seemed distinctive and original seems to have become exclusively a Richard D James fan club. 'Tied' has a kind of "music-minus-1" feel. That bloody kick drum sound that was so prominent on the 'Starethrough' EP is back, featured in a kind of 100 BPM hip hop pattern that repeats without variation for 6 minutes. Behind that, there's a very quiet assortment of muffled noises, the most prominent of which is what sounds like someone fiddling with the knobs of a guitar amplifier with nothing plugged in. That's it. If there's a point to this I'd like to hear about it. Personally, I'd have preferred they'd recorded an all acoustic sing-along of 'Jimmy Crack Corn' for a B side. I will give this a few more spins to see if something wonderful pops out at me, but my hopes are not high. I hope they're saving something a little more engaging for their next full length. -- Kent Williams -- kent@gilligan.cadsi.com Look in the mail header for all sorts of vital information about me. It's called "Succour" and its on the way. - next week (20th) is the UK release date which has been promised. It's very good too - unmistakably Seefeel, mostly farily chilled out, but there are some big beats nestling in there. Might make you feel queasy at times, or might mellow you right out. Heh, yeah, it's been bugging me. There's so much enjoyable older music that it seems a real shame for the desire for something new to automatically equal the desire for something just released, rather than just for something I haven't heard yet. Especially when an older release is something from maybe '98 or whenever, it just seems ridiculous to me to apply arbitrary limits to what you're interested in checking out. The only excuse I can think of is if you're the worst kind of production nerd. Some examples: The first Slicker album 'Confidence in Duber' (on Hefty, no less!) is great fun. It seems to have more of a context now. Which is a fancy way of saying I've heard more stuff like it since I first got it, and that makes it a bit easier to digest. Also, I can never give enough praise to Harmonia's 'Musik von...' which just rocks my world. From '74, and a great listen for people into more recent German minimalism, bands like Seefeel, whatever.. dreamy, mesmerising. Pretty Boy Crossover released 'The Building and Formation' relatively recently, but that's mainly stuff from '98 and '99. I'm really enjoying that as well, and interviewed them for igloomag.com ... check that out shortly and hopefully it'll be up there. If anyone likes the idea of 70s soul stuff with some psychedelic and folk references, I hope you've checked out the Shuggie Otis reissue on Luaka Bop. That was my definite favourite discovery of 2001, although again it's from the 70s. Sorta covers what's nice about someone like Nick Drake and someone like, I dunno, maybe Al Green or Bill Withers when they're on form. Then there's these crazy organ instrumentals in there that are like Stereolab or something... Ok, enough rambling. There's Succour on Warp (1995) but the etherial floaty sound you describe would fit "Pure/Impure" on the Too Pure label, featuring two tracks mixed by AFX (Fast mix and slow mix of Time to Find Me). Mark Clifford then went on as Disjecta, but that entirely different i feel.
